Re: Weather = rain
We just had nearly an inch in about half an hour. Obviously because we had just shorn some sheep. :p
Staying very warm though. And maybe another thunder shower on the way too. Garden looks great after that refreshment.

Ended up with 91mm for the day.
Everything feels ... damp.... Considering our February often has no rain at all this adds up to a lot. LOL

Re: Weather = rain
No rain today - good thing too since there were some local roads flooded this afternoon! Looks like most of the rain is in southern NSW at the moment. We may get some tonight/tomorrow.

Re: Weather = rain
Amazing to read how wet it's been everywhere but here, and maybe Rosalie's. We only had 47ml on one day in January, then .8ml divided over two other days, and nothing in February at all until 2ml this morning. I have lost so many roses. Things liked plum trees, even agapanthus are starting to look sick. Very disheartening warching storms go north and south of us.

Sheep all done, David. We ended up with 91mm. Some people near us had 120mm. (in 24hrs). Some roads in the area were cut yesterday as a result of flash flooding.

pffft. *has not*
Just about to head out and find out the damage. LOTS of rain overnight and still going. 2-3" would be my guesstimate.

Re: Weather = rain
Hehe He meant in the half hour. We ended up with about 85mm for last night/this morning. On top of the 91 on Monday... a little squelchy but I'm awfully glad we live on a hill. And it's times like these I'm really glad we have free-draining soil! (In the drought it wasn't so super though).

Re: Weather = rain
While I am very happy with the mere 15 ml we just got , I amost feel guilty seeing so many people everywhere have been flooded. Which makes me wonder, what do floods do to gardens, and to roses in particular? Should know, just in case. How long can a rose survive wet feet? A quick answer from anyone would suffice, don't want to hijack the thread.

Re: Weather = rain
Betty, I have had them sit in water for around 1 1/2 wks, a couple of the young ones died , but overall they were ok. I would not like to have them with wet feet any longer than that.

Re: Weather = rain
Betty your not thread jacking, just asking a related question. When I was at the rose nursery we would leave rose in bath tubs for weeks if they were damaged or small, then pot them up. They grew new hair roots like hyacinmths do. If the soils became "sodic" that would change the whole thing. Does your soil drain Betty ?
I remember not that long ago we were praying for you when your whole area was flooded.

Re: Weather = rain
When we had a geat deal of water laying in front of my house, about 15 months ago, I lost the small collection of preriannals I had. But the roses were find.
Also years ago, and sometimes more recently, I have had roses sitting in containers of water for ages in late winter/ early Spring when I had too many to plant at once.

Re: Weather = rain
Betty when we had floods last year, our roses were fine but I did loose a few tall bearded Iris's and myGardinias ended up looking like dead sticks, I am slack and didn't get round to pulling them out. So pleased I left them as a few months later they had new leaves. They are now as good as they were before

Re: Weather = rain
Well, I recalled that floods will kill your pasture, which is why I asked about roses. We've got red clay here, David, covered by varying amounts of topsoil. Means dry weather roads only if they are gravel or dirt and places that would bog a duck, like if anyone got off the tracks in the forest opposite us they could easily get bogged. The last flood crept about 16 feet into our front garden so best to know about the roses in case the next one goes further. Watching these latest floods on TV I realised that while I was so sad for all the houseold disasters, I hadn't thought about all the lovely gardens lost as well. Poor people.
Carol, bad luck about your irises. That's a timely warning for me too, perhaps it'd be better to lift them if floods were likely. So far I haven't any in spots that have flooded before.
