Re: Weather = rain
I had them, Army worms I think they are called. Noticed a lot of wasps circling the yard at first and then the grass began to die off. Got some grub powder from Bunnings and sprinkled it everywhere and the hosed it in. Did the trick. From what I read the wasp want the grubs to lay their eggs into. a mobile pen , Gary......that way you can move it around the lawn and the chooks can clean plus fertilize the lawn at the same time.....

Re: Weather = rain
Not sure if the chooks would be good for your lawn though They love to dig big holes! The magpies have bigger beaks for getting those grubs.
When I am weeding etc and find the grubs I feed them to the chooks.

Re: Weather = rain
We call them witchy grubs. They eat rose roots so don't get them in pots.

Re: Weather = rain
I just know them as lawn grubs and I get them also, took one of the roses out of the pot to put it into the ground and found about ten of them in there. Another trip to Bunnings for more powder.. boy it drives ya nuts don't it, all part of the fun I guess. At least the Army worms are gone. Yard is lovely and green after all the rain.

Re: Weather = rain
as a rule.....Black beetle and there grubs do not like heavy water....they can't swim.....a green keeper told me once to flood the lawns and this will send all the beetle to the surface and then you go along a pick them up......chemical free....
Just a side note.......it only takes one or two of these black beetle to make a mess of your lawns, not a a army of them.

Re: Weather = rain
Sorry, wrong spelling , CURL GRUBS. found in garden beds and pots.
Different from Army Worms. Curl Grubs eat the roots of plants, roses as well as others. Not to be confused with Root Rot damage.

Yes, I've suspected for a while that the presence of curl grubs has been one reason some of my roses haven't done as well.... (on top of the water/fertiliser/rabbit issues!)

Re: Weather = rain
The two pix above are definately Curl Grubs, what they turn into I'm not sure. When I'm digging grafted understocks (Usually about 600)
I come across numerous numbers and again when upsizing pots.
Wendy, you can identify them from the two pix above. I'de bet Sydney to a Curl Grub that's correct.

Re: Weather = rain
When I'm digging, I always put the curl grubs in a dish and leave them out for the birds. They love them. I've always wondered what the huge ones were - now I know...Christmas Beetles.

Re: Weather = rain
Good one Silky, I squeeze them between my thumb and index finger then throw them out on a path or hard surface. I'm sure the birds get them.
