It can arrive about 10am as we have to pick about 5 tonne of Sangiovese grapes. It is thundering as I type this

Maree, it stopped as we started picking, six spots later we finished. As I sit and type this a severe thunderstorm warning has been given out for us, I would rather we just got,

Re: Weather = rain
We got 65mm, a mini tornado, and the power out for 22hrs. Up around the Murray they had it really bad. Bad enough here..... Our place was spared though. But a drive down our road revealed a 200m stretch like this: (It took all night to get it cleared)

Re: Weather = rain
It's okay - we didn't lose anything. Only our neighbours lost fences and sheds. We're sheltered from that direction by our lovely big granite hill! Our worst inconvenience was losing power for nearly a full day.

Re: Weather = rain
OMG, Autumn, that picture looks like you were lucky to escape a lot of damage. It must have been scary though. Long time to go without power. Your poor neighbours! Do you get many tornados like that?

Re: Weather = rain
There was a lot of wind here and the odd branch down but didn't realise how bad it had been until today.
There was another one go through about 10 (?) yrs ago - parallel to this one but about 6km south. Must be the way the weather comes over the top of the Strathbogie/Warrenbayne hills into our valley.
The roses don't appear to have been too worried. Not that there were many blooms at the moment to be shredded by the hail.

They're about an hour and a bit north of us.maree wrote:Are you far from Yarrawonga and the other towns it hit , Autumn ?
The line of storms on the radar was pretty impressive - parts of the rainfall were showing up at monsoonal rates. Of course you never quite know what else will come *with* it. Certainly wouldn't have expected tornados. I should have looked outside in the other direction though and then I would have seen the greenish clouds.

Re: Weather = rain
Surveyed more damage today. My poor neighbour doesn't have a secure paddock on his entire (large) property. The storm came from the west and headed east - straight through the length of this guy's place.
Found out that a couple of others had damage to roofs. A windmill bent in half. Cattle all in the wrong places but perhaps only the one death of a cow.

Re: Weather = rain
Whether you call them tornado's or mini cyclones I do not know, it's the havoc they cause. We could put it down to "Climate change or Global warming", to me it is natural weather.

Re: Weather = rain
We are getting showers but the lawn grubs have turned our lawns into brown wastelands. I hate the buggers but not a lot you can do when you have large areas.
At the least the flock of ibis and wild ducks are getting fat on the ones in the horse paddock.

Re: Weather = rain
No its a grub. Not the cream witchy grub but a brown army grub.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
It eats the leaves of the grass and mostly affects the cooch grass.
The most obvious sign of them initially is a wasp that flies about around them. What it does I'm not sure but the grub turns into a moth.
