They are looking good Dan, considering the heat we have had. Your Abraham Darby is such a sumptuous fellow and stands up well in hot weather, for such a delicate looking rose. Mine is the same, seems it likes the heat. Dioressence is another one that you would expect to fry. Yours is lovely.
I'm rather taken with Louis XIV.

thanks silky. Louis is a nice looking rose, it fades to almost the darkest red , there was another bloom next to it very dark , it tolerates lots of sun but I grow mine in part shade as it brings out the better colour

Hi Maree, so far I have to say I am not impressed with BC , got it bare root last year , and probably since then had about 8 blooms half of them unfortunately got burnt by the heat , and as far as the scent not as high as they advertise , although it is still a young rose , will see how it will go otherwise its going to mums .

Looks like they are doing pretty good in this weather Jordan, does it take you long to dead head them all . Have you got any other climbers that you like ? Not too large apart from Pierre de Ronstad and Nahema , perfumed too ....please ...

Yes your roses look wonderful Dan, considering how hot it's been. Your photos always tempt me with something new or a rose that has come off my list and then I see yours and think...maybe???? Benjamin Britten and Firestar are a case in point. Louis XIV I really like too. I notice you have mulch in your pots. Do you have any trouble with birds chucking it out? I only have a couple of pots and am forever scraping mulch up to put it back. Very annoying.

Yep, got it in one Maree. I don't mind them, they're such busy hard working birds, but I wish I could just let them know there aint any worms in there, wasting your time. They do make a mess in the garden. Lucky I'm not really a neat freak.

Your roses are lovely Jordan.
How old is your Monsieur Tiller? And how does it go for you in a pot ? I am stuck with growing roses in pots, and I would like to try some teas, and Mons. Tiller is a lovely looking rose, but I have heard it can get a bit big...

Curdle, have we asked you yet what you're growing in your pots? I have my noisettes in the ground, but I keep my HTs and floris in pots because I'm too lazy to dig holes.
Do you grow any for the vase? Are you a scent hound, or perhaps a connoisseur of form or colour hound?

Glad to see some other crazy person is still up (watching the Olympics?)

lol no Olympics:)..I tend to be a late night person, and all the hot weather doesnt help..plus I have the next two days off work...

I have only just started trying roses in the last two years (before that it was vegies and bulbs). I have about 25 so far..mostly the smaller Austins, but far too many HTs are slipping through, because they tend to be cheap impulse buys at hardware stores...bit of a worry, as I know they probably wont be as happy in pots as in the ground.
I have been looking into small teas and minatures lately! I promise!

Post by jordan71 11th February 2014, 07:47

hi curdle , roses can be happy in pots for many years , offcourse bear in mind ,regular watering is required as well as food and above all the size of the pots is essential, have been growing my roses in pots for over 4 years now , it is lot more work to have them in pots , I re pot mine every two to three years , unfortunately for me I have no choice as I rent and I cant afford to buy a place .

Monsieur tiller I have had for three years ( he is in a bigger pot so he seems happier ) you can always grow MT in a smaller pot but a decent size would be better

good luck
