Re: Lots of Roses
Oooh Dan, more beauties. Black Caviar looks delectable. Really like Louche as well, a new one for me.

Re: Lots of Roses
I find The Squire is a rose that is actually quite difficult to photograph with its true colour. It's a dark red that fades to purple - and hot sun will speed that up.
I'd agree with Dan - I've never seen it as a standard and its growth habit tends to be short bush and twiggy(ish). And VERY prickly.

Re: Lots of Roses
Hmmm! Gorgeous photos ... I can almost smell them! Would love to grow these here but not sure how they'd do up here? I think I have rose envy!!

Re: Lots of Roses
Your roses are looking superb Dan. Yesterday at Werribee I wasn't too impressed with Parole but your photo has left me envious. Gorgeous! Same with Abraham Darby. Mine is just a baby still but producing fantastic huge flowers. Unfortunately the stems can't support the weight of them and they tend to lie on the ground. I'm think maybe I need a tripod or something to help it along or maybe I should just give it time to bulk up. What do you think?
Christopher Marlowe is truly beautiful, one I'd love to have. How is its growth habit? Long arms or compact? Princess Alexandra of Kent will find its way into my garden one day for sure...dunno where though.

This could also be said about your "Sudden Collapse" incident.. Pushing babies to quick maybe. ?

hello silky ,
Abraham Darby has bushy, arching habit, if u like u can support it by a trellis or something silky , but u gotta give it a year or another to establish itself.
Christopher Marlowe growth is short but very vigorous with lots of stems arising from the base and later branching to give a continuous flowers. love the colour it is so much better to see this rose in person, when u see it from a distance the colour just pulls you towards it
hope this helps silky

Re: Lots of Roses
It does indeed Dan, thank you! Yes I agree about Christopher Marlowe, there's something about the colour that whispers to me "I want to live in your garden".
Abraham Darby I'll just give it time though. It's going like a train, so many flower buds.

Re: Lots of Roses
Christopher Marlowe is whispering to me, too. Very compelling looker, good reviews. Probably won't make it as a vase rose, but I have a spot in mind for it where it can be a living bouquet. Does anyone have a source for this one?

Re: Lots of Roses
Roseman, the ONLY thing these roses have had is some cow manure (about 1-2inches) around the dripline, in spring. Should I not be doing this? Maybe nothing at all for the first year?roseman wrote:

Re: Lots of Roses
Shouldn't be a problem with the cow manure, silky....I put it around new ones all the time as well as dig it in when planting...

Re: Lots of Roses
Yes I go easy with baby roses. I'd much rather they develop a good strong root system and a healthy constitution that will pay dividends in the long run, than push them along with lots of rose food. I'm also pretty lazy.

Re: Lots of Roses
hi maree, black caviar is the same for me, nice blooms , great colour , so far the perfume not as strong as they advertise, we will wait and see, it may depends on the weather or time of the day.

Re: Lots of Roses
Oh well , we agree on that one Jordan , i'll give it three years to prove itself , i find the same with Blackberry Nip , great blooms , great colour , and a good bush but the fragrance is only there when the weather suits it ..

Re: Lots of Roses
Maree, another thing to consider we all can smell things differently , I am a smoker . last time I took my mum to see some roses , she could smell some scent of certain roses that I couldn't or we could smell one rose and not agree that is strong or weak. so some people can say this rose has very strong scent and my nose would say nah LOL

Re: Lots of Roses
Yep , you'r right Jordan , my mum swears Princess De Monaco has a strong scent , but i can only smell a faint scent , lovely rose though , same with Double Delight , i just don't think the fragrance is as strong as they say , but then our changeable weather has a lot to do with it too , just went out and sniffed all the roses , and there are some definate stand outs ....

Re: Lots of Roses
Lol ha ha Betsy , just teasing , thought you would ask that , best smellers are the usual standouts , Firefighter , Oaklahoma , Camp David , Pope John , Olde Fragrance , the other fragrant roses don't have opening buds at the moment , i planted Soul Mate and Deane Ross around at mums , Soul Mate definately has a unusual licorice smell and Deane Ross is a bit too young to tell yet. Blackberry Nip and Black Caviar in my garden are very similar in colour and fragrance , one will stay , one will go eventually ...

Re: Lots of Roses
Just came back from Bunnings in Morisset - every single one of the 12 + Neptunes they had last week are GONE. The garden guy said that they sold out in three days. Jeez, those Neps were beautiful specimens...
The very same garden guy attempted to interest me in an Iceberg/Lili Marlene splice instead. God loves a tryer.
