Re: Spring Roses
Your Kardinal looks in a better state than mine Val.
Kevin gave me the bush for my birthday last year and I still have it in a pot so I can keep it close to the house when it's flowering .
I'd pruned it and fertilised it and been liquid feeding and it was looking great , loaded with buds just starting to open . Till last weekend.
One of the horses [Bella most likely] has eaten every bud off it. All I have got now is all these headless stalks sticking up.
Is your nun the D.A one ? it has a lot more petals than I remember .
[but then my memory isn't like I remember either ]
cheers. Rosalie

Re: Spring Roses
Oh how disappointing for you after you gave Kardinal so much TLC. It is a top rose to look at. It would be perfect if it had fragrance!
Yes, The Nun is a DA, it must be an old variety as I never see any for sale. I'm not expecting too much from most of my roses this year. For some reason they have grown masses of blind shoots. It's all very mysterious. I've just been checking for Aphids, and yes, they're arriving!
Cheers,
Val

Re: Spring Roses
That was about 6 weeks ago and today I have noticed them back into the new rose bed ? Strange about the blind growth, never heard of that , I know I get the odd new shoot with no buds, never really taken any notice before

Re: Spring Roses
Hi Dave,
Ebb Tide is a great little rose. It is one of the early bloomers, has a strong fragrance, is relatively healthy here. It's a small bush in a pot but might be bigger in the ground. It reblooms frequently and the blooms are quite long-lasting. I hope that's a help

It was very popular in W.A last season , sold out apparently so I'm hoping to get my turn this time around because I need more roses.

Re: Spring Roses
It looks really lovely. Most of my roses are still or week or more off, and this weekend won't hurry them. Max forecast for both days up here 13... How come we're back to winter?

Re: Spring Roses
Gary as you travelled 3000k around SA, Vic, how did you get all those rose home in that condition and flowering so soon, they are or are you a .
What were the roses you were looking for ? or just to see them in situ so you can buy more in winter, Did you go to nurseries and/or gardens, to all the people saying he is a sticky beak and the answer is yes

Re: Spring Roses
Roseman
We went on a bit of a driving holiday looking at nuseries, gardens etc in SW South Australia and central(?) Victoria mainly. We flew into Adelaide, hired a car and drove to Melbourne by a very zig zag route.
We visited Renmark for its rose festival and visited the national tea garden at Rustons. Unfortunately it was a week or so too early this year because of the cold winter and there was not a lot in flower. In SA we also visited Margaret's at Mt Barker, met (by shear fluke) Pat Toolan at the Barossa Respository, Carrick Hill in Adelaide plus several private gardens and those in local parks.
We drove down the Great Ocean Road (in perfect weather) and onto Mornington Peninsula visiting Diggers and a couple of other gardens and nuseries and then to stay in Daylesford for 3 days as it was pretty central to what we wanted to see.
We visited Lambly, Mystydowns, Frogmore, Spring Creek plus numerous other small nurseries. We had a look at several private gardens and Budda House at Caslemaine. Unfortunately we missed the Alister Clarke garden at Bulla because for some reason I thought Bulla was in northern Victoria and was surprised to see the turnoff on the Freeway while driving to the Airport.
As for buying plants we did not get any roses but stocked up on lots of perenials. We actually posted a lot of our clothes home (they got home before us) and before we left we barerooted the plants, put them in cliplock bags and brought them home on the plane. All are now planted and seem to be ok. We had to do this as the plants are not available up our way and we had the chance to pick the plants we wanted and not go by potluck.
It was a great holiday but unfortunately I have to go back to work next week but anyway nextime Lee (wife) wants to take to ute and trailer down so that will be fun!!!
