Hi All,
Just an update on the newbies I bought last week at Big W. They were planted over the weekend and seem to be settling in well. Falling in Love has the healthiest looking shoots and I hope this is a good omen. Will keep the forum posted on its progress.
Cheers,
Louise.

According to a talk I heard recently I am not sure buying roses from super market so early in the year is a good idea.

Although from experience I haven't had many problems from supermarket roses. I wonder what experiences others have had?

I have found that if you get in early, just after the plants have arrived and the plants haven't been tossed around with gay abandon in the store, that selecting a sturdy plant with several branches can be very rewarding in time. I need to pot the bare rooteds on and put them in the glasshouse until plant out in november, when the frosts have abated.  In recent years however, i have noted that in our K-Mart the variety of bare rooted roses is poor indeed, with only the usual suspects (Pascali, QE II, Chrysler, Papa M, Just Joey, iceberg, Gold Bunny)..whereas maybe 5 yrs back I could get Mrs Oakley Fisher, Wedding Day (the vareties you often see with the Oval tag with 'Old Fashioned' on it..

I got Renae on the throw-out rack at Bunnies and it didn't do terribly well - but this was, perhaps doe to the combo of throw-out rack health and the hottest summer I've ever experienced in Melbourne.

I bought several "bagged' roses from Bunnings last year and they have done very well especially Father's Love.  I brought this one to my new house in a pot and it's looking fine and ready to go in the garden in a months time.  Coming up Roses

Hi All,
Just following up on my bare root rose purchases in may. Most of them have small buds but Baronne E de Rothschild is quite precocious with a bud that is about to bloom. Also a Seduction and Jubilee Celebration that I picked up cheap aren't too far behind it.
Cheers,
Louise.

Woohoo, picked up my newies from Silkies yesterday and planted them when I got home. Now I just have to wait until spring. Meanwhile, the pruning still has to be done....
Louise, last year the Baronne was one I ordered. Unfortunately it never "took" and withered away, while all the others took off like rockets. I'm sure you'll love it.

Over the years I have had the odd problem with Baronne E de Rothschild an I have lost two of them. It was early in my days of growing roses and I am not sure whether if was me or the rose itself. As an exhibitor's rose Baronne E de Rothschild fits into the Decorative Class and along with Duet and Gold Medal would be considered one of the best. If my memory serves me right the AQ and I won the champion ribbon for decorative roses in the NSW Centenary Show with the rose.

Hi Ausrose,
Thanks for the advice. I think sometimes roses don't survive despite all the care that is given to them. I'm hoping to have a go at showing roses at some point. It sounds quite challenging and interesting.
Cheers,
Louise☺

Ausrose, interesting that you have found Duet is a good exhibitors rose. I don't exhibit but find this is an excellent rose in the garden. Mine must be going on about 15 years and still pumps out beautiful blooms each season, tough as old boots.

Louise exhibiting roses can be an exhilerating experience if you have approach it in the right frame of mind. The AQ and my attitude is you give it your best shot, enjoy the day out and if you win a championship ribbon it is a bonus.

I got my barrone de rothschid last year and it was one of the first to take off and gave me so many blooms and a very tuff rose.Everybody rates duet as a great garden rose and joyfullness as a good show rose to.

There are two sports of Barrone E de Rothschild these being Louisa Jane and Frances Louise. I don't grow Frances Louise but I have had three bushes of Louisa Jane for a number of years and found it every bit as good as Baronne E de Rothschild. At the moment I have three Frances Louise on order from Thomas for Roses. Like Barrone E de Rothschild both of the sports are good roses for the decorative class on the show bench in NSW.

I bought Duet the year before last and it is only since I moved it (it was in a pot) to my new house,  it has decided to come "alive"!!  It put out a tremendous thick shoot, but no flowers.  Looked good though.  I've now planted it into the garden and pruned it.  Just hoping it performs next season!
