Re: Black Caviar Rose
I certainly think we could bet, using imaginary rose petals . I will wager 20 rose petals to 1 rose petal that this rose is going to be 1) a sluggish bloomer and 2) a spotter. I am betting against this one, even though I'm buying it.
So there you are. I'll give those who have faith in BC very decent odds of 20-1. Any takers?

Yep , your on Betsy , i'll bet against you , being a eternal optimist , and i'll say it will make it out of its pot and into my garden bed within 8 months of receiving it, now what odds is that , i always get mixed up with odds , haven't got a TAB screen in front of me ..

Re: Black Caviar Rose
Well, how many rose petals are you willing to risk, maree? ;-))))) At 20-1, you might consider:
Your 5 rose petals to my 100 rose petals
your 10 rose petals to my 200 petals
and so on...
Come in, spinner

Ok ladies, I work in the wine industry, You think it hard with roses that smell like citrus. Try your Shiraz for instance, on what I reckon of the chocolate wheel the winemaker has it as strawberry, citrus, blackberry, olive, carrot or whatever. To me it tastes like Shiraz grape.

I do think that several New Zealand whites taste very distinctly of grapefruit, though. Perhaps I am being stalked by a citrus tree.

Re: Black Caviar Rose
Hey Maree, if you win your bet that's 200 rose petals. equivalent of a whole bush!! Good way to restock I reckon. Lol. Mind you probabilities are with Betsy. It will be interesting to see the outcome down the track.
Guess what I bought today? Jubilee Celebration! She just waved and waved then jumped into my arms. Visited the nursery and had a wander, picking up some perennials, and there she was. Love at first sight. Also got Darcy Bussell, which was probably a mistake, but what the heck, sometimes it's nice to throw caution to the wind. How big did your JC get Maree? my information says medium. It has several flowers on it, just beautiful, I couldn't resist.
Anyone have Darcy Bussell? Supposed to be short but growth in pot looks like it will be taller than "short, compact".
Ha! So much for that carefully compiled list, that I've sweated over for weeks. Shot to hell already. Lol
BTW re Tournament of Roses, which Ozeboy mentioned earlier. I planted this in my garden years ago, it was supposed to be fantastic. I found its pink flowers dead set boring. Just goes to show how we are all different and want different things from our roses.

Re: Black Caviar Rose
Good on you Silky, well done , Jubilee Celebration grew to a medium sized bush and i felt like a murderer when i pulled her out , but this year she's coming back , could you smell a fragrance on her Silky ? Let me know how she goes for you , i had her in full sun , i did read somewhere partial shade is best , dunno . 200 rose petals wow , bets on , this rose had better be a bloody good one , or else i'm $50.00 and 200 petals down lol !!

Re: Black Caviar Rose
I'll bet 100 rose petals that Ms Bussell is going to be a winner for you, silky. One of THE most exqusitely shaped and bloomiforous young plants I have ever seen at a garden nursery. It actuallyout-swing-tagged its DA swing tag. A customer nearer to the rose grabbed it straight away, or I would have taken it without further ado or research. Unforgettable looking thing.
I'll be really really interested to hear how you rate it for form and abundance against Munstead Wood....

Re: Black Caviar Rose
Loved JC's fragrance at first sniff Maree, rich but fresh, strong enough to waft I'm hoping. Flowers currently look a bit Abraham Darby shade but the picture in magic Gardens is much brighter. Maybe summer sun washes her out. Maybe the partial shade you mention is a means to intensify flower colour. I don't care what colour she is, I love her already. Of course your high recommendations for her made me stop and look and sniff. Thanks Maree!
Darcy Bussell Whoo hoo!! that's very encouraging Maree. I'm happy now and will just enjoy her. She hasn't got any flowers on her at the moment so I'm looking forward to seeing her in real life as opposed to pix. Will let you know how they go.

Re: Black Caviar Rose
Silky , you'r probably right , full sun could fade JCs petals a bit , i read the partial shade bit somewhere , when i was doing a search on it , looking for the right spot for her , Darcy is Betsy's recommendation , i don't have that one , but it certainly sounds good , good luck with them Silky ...

Re: Black Caviar Rose
Okay, you are now in for 20 rp to 400rp.
Black Caviar (the horse) is so good that she's not even racing the field, she's racing against the course itself. She broke the record for the track yesterday.
Black Caviar (the rose) is so unknown that the only info on it is a solitary pic of a solitary red flower, and the blurb promise of honey jasmine vanilla scent, all provided by the diustributor. I'm looking forward to making lotsa potpourri ;-))

Re: Black Caviar Rose
Maree I hope for your sake BC is indeed a winner. It would be sad if a dud rose was named for such an outstanding champion. She broke the track record and hardly raised a sweat.
