Black rose

Is there a black rose available at all? I know there are engineered and have successfully grown black tulips so would like to try a rose as well

I think the scientist have tried this as well as blue ones without success

To the best of my knowledge there is no black rose available and that also goes with blue.
There seems to be no black or blue genes in the rose family, they have tried to import blue genes with limited success. I think it was Japanese/Australian consortium.
When Ozroz reads this he will be able to shed more light on it as he is a breeder of roses.

Dave its called photo manipulation, colours are intensifed more than what they really are.

Utumoa there is an American fellow from the NW USA who has bred some very dark roses, If you go on Helpmefind , go to breeders and put in Barden. Have a look at these .

Dave with the blue rose , blue genes were put in but the Ph in rose plants has caused problems.

Warren, I had a look at the Paul Barden roses, none jumped out at me, although the second last, 27-07-16, IMO was the best of them. I wonder if it would hold that colour as it ages and how do you think it would cope here in OZ

Dave i was pointing out to utumoa about very dark roses, it is amazing how you cross a mauve rose with a dk orange come russet , it darkens it to a purply red. I think the colour would hold, but being a dark colour and being in OZ the petals might scorch due to it absorbing more heat from the sun. Something you would have to trial in this country

Hi Alee, an other group used the pigment from petunias and it was found that petunia ph was more acidic than roses, when put into roses it turned pink.
