New 2011 purchases
Here's the obligatory 2011 list for what people are loking at buying this winter and why... if you haven't started thinking about this you should have a browse through the list on mailorder nurseries listed in links section ( [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]), as there are many quality nurseries out there that I'm sure would appreciate your business
I'm mainly trying to think of roses to breed with so my list is:
'Carabella', 'Purple Rain', 'Freycinet', 'Playboy', 'Borderer', and 'Golden Vision'

Re: New 2011 purchases
I've never heard of Purple Rain so I went to HMF to check it out. I'm assuming you want a purple, not a red, so you'd want the HT, not the floribunda by that name. But it seems to be available almost nowhere. Where do you hope to get it?!
I like Borderer quite a lot. It's improving with age in my garden.

Re: New 2011 purchases
Purple Rain is one of Treloars new releases. It's a Kordes ground cover that I hope will be fertile and help in my quest for a really purple (dark pruple) ground cover

Geez Treloars are quick off the mark, aren't they? I had no idea new season's catalogues were available already.
Purple Rain looks good. Got a lot of time for groundcovers but I wish they were perfumed. Sigh.

Freycinet is absolutely gorgeous, Simon.
The huge hips are bigger and shinier than other rugosas . They look like glass. I was admiring it recently, at the home of it's lovely Tassie breeder, Lilia Weatherley. Its on my wishlist.

Re: New 2011 purchases
I still have to send you some iris rhizomes, Abbi... Need a clone of myself to get everything done I think
Re: New 2011 purchases
I always assumed you already had several clones in order to achieve everything that you do!
Don't worry about the iris...Mr Abbi has slowed up on the garden building projects lately......he's catching his breath!
If you do get time, my favourite in your garden is Witches Sabbath, but no rush.

Re: New 2011 purchases
Oooh, I have to say that I too, like the look of Purple Rain! I wonder if my old friend The Magpie is lurking on here and can give us some first hand info on this rose?
I'm hoping that I can add Charles Rennie MacIntosh, Immortal Juno and Tradescant to my garden again this year. I have emailed Donna from Hedgerow to send these to me as soon as they are ready.

Buys this year
Ok, it is rose buying time again, if you dare. So what have we purchased or ordered so far.
For me I have purcgased some replacement HT's. The reason for this is I was/am slack. I did not care for them after planting and the garden got overgrown with grass and weeds, all fixed now.
The purchase list is not finished, but, there is a list of DA's from Carole as long as your arm. For me there are the old fashioned, rugosa's, the odd damask, bourbon, moss.
I could not find the list at present so wil add tonight.

Re: New 2011 purchases
I'm re-stocking so perhaps I can be forgiven for the compulsive zeal with which I repeatedly vacuumed the cash out of my debit card to buy more roses- at least that's what I tell myself.
So far
About a dozen Austins
5 Brindabellas
2 Rugosas
3 Teas from Ross Roses - Frances Dubrieul, Mrs Reynolds Hole and St Francis Xavier
Zepherine Drouin and Reine de Violette
Some landscaping roses from Treloars including a scrumptious looking one - Purple Rain
+ assorted freebies as thanks for my frenzied buying binge.
Ah well - nobody has ever accused me of being restrained

Re: New 2011 purchases
Hi,
so far I've bought 15 bare root roses and they were mostly to fill holes where I've lost roses recently. Just well known ones mostly - Oklahoma, Camp David, a couple more Just Joeys and a couple of Gold Bunny's. Lavender Pinocchio, Apricot Gem, Peter Frankenfeld, Avon, Athena, Margaret Merrill, a couple of Angel Faces and Chrysler Imperial. I have another 6 or 7 to go , but I want some tea roses for those spaces. I removed some roses but took cuttings of them before they went.

Re: New 2011 purchases
I have over 40 sitting in pots and I'm waiting for rain before I plant them. After our two lots of flooding the ground has now dried out and is like concrete. I did plant two climbers and to do that needed the crowbar to break the soil up. I really shouldn't buy any roses this year but do have my usual wish list.
larryp, Zepherine Drouhin is lovely, isn't it? Very fragrant.

Re: New 2011 purchases
Betty, I will second that about the soil being like concrete, not sure where the water table is, but it must be a long way down.

Re: New 2011 purchases
Hi Sonya
The Brindabellas I've orfered are
Bouquet
Goldie
Raspberry Twirl
Pearl
Magnifica
The breeders promise gorgeous blooms, magnificent fragrance and above all no Blackspot. Probably BS about the BS but ready to give them a shot.
Hi Betty
Yes Zeph is fragrant, gaudy and a real butt kicker in the garden - som e of my fave rose qualities.
Have you tried her sister Kathleen Harrop - now there's a rose. Will climb mountains in the right spot. She's a more restrained colour than Zeph but the same delicious pong

Re: New 2011 purchases
Larry, I quite like the Zepherine Drouhin pink, also Best Friend's pink, they are quite eye catching. When I show a rose catalogue to my husband he always chooses the candy pink/cyclamin pink roses, so I have to cater for that. I haven't grown Kathleen Harrop, she sounds lovely too.
Roseman, sad to say, we had to bury one of our old cattle dogs last week and I have to ask myself where did all that moisture from the floods go? It was hard digging all the way.

Re: New 2011 purchases
Betty when I was preparing the ground for the roses out of town, first I tried with a rotary hoe , which was useless, then farmer friend offered to plough it for me with some disc ploughs, it saved me hours of digging.

Re: New 2011 purchases
I'm doing rose beds in a small garden that I made into my pet cemetry actually, so I can't get equipment like that in there. I only need some decent rain. Although some of it might be easier digging than ground that has never been dug, in beds where I lost a rose for instance, I still prefer a good soaking first. What sort of soil do you have in Deni'? I've visited Hay, which may be different again to Deni', but I wasn't a gardener back then anyway. Is it sandy?
