New seedlings for 2011

These are seedlings from last springs pollination, one good thing this year is that there has been no fungus problems at all, mind you my breeding programme went in a totally different direction. Growth has been vigorous , with a lot forming flower buds at an early stage (10 wks old).

Same seedlings photographed on the 31st August 2011, spaced with empty containers to allow growth , all these have been planted out in the grow out beds in a field situation.

thats a lot......You will not become bored with your babies. They are looking very healthy indeed.

Bernhard whats this Watter LOL its Warren. Had a big turn around in breeding programmes last spring, tried some things which were new and have not looked back, absolutely no fungus problems , which is good. Bernhard did a Sympathie X Conrad F Meyer all the seedlings look real good, will be interesting to see if a little rugosa is any benefit.

I think I may have bred to much again this year

Hi Bemo; theres no secret, just put everything I know about growing plants. Soil mixes are very important, if friable and loose, root development is at its greatest enabling the plant to uptake more nutrient and therefore grow more rapidly. But if to loose nutrient will be leached out more readily due to the increased watering to keep them moist. The seedlings in the lower photograph, when I transplanted them the other day had completely filled the pot with roots.

Warren, is the mix in the pots , just standard and what about the field soils, anything special done to them

Dave the potting mix is a commercial one used by friends of mine who have a nursery, I mix their general potting mix with their propagating mix 50/50. I think I covered this in a previous thread to Bruce a while ago in hybridizing, under seedlings germinating . Nothing special though, just some liquid feeding of alternating aquasol and seaweed exract.

Thanks, the brain was not in operation mode at the time of posting, I have a mix here at present which is just what they call a ' garden mix' it is leaning towards a propagation mix, seems more sandy. All the rose hips I have found over the last couple of months are going in it now, just for fun, if they germinate, they germinate.

Dave I hope you have stratified your seed in the fridge for a minimum time of 6wks , otherwise they will take ages to germinate. The soil where I have them growing out of town is what we call here Cobram loam. Red brown soils very easy to dig if moist, but in summer the top 3" sets like cement, therefore mulching is quite important. The soil here at home is similar but with a little more clay content. Roses planted in this Cobram loam bolt in growth, Ph is 7 and is high in iron, never have problems with chlorosis.
