Best cutting rose

Does anyone have a favorite cutting rose? and how well does it stand up to the weather?

Carabella the Australian shrub
Elina HT is easy to strike and is a favourite HT world wide
Most of the old Teas
Mutabilis I find quite difficult
Ramblers are easy
Minis are good to above average like Rise 'n Shine, Piroette, Bluesette

Hi! 'Lolita' in the apricot blend shades keeps well.

But I wanted to tell you about 'Eliza'.
I planted this rose last year for no other reason than it has the name of my grand-daughter & I wanted it in my collection. I knew nothing about it.
It is described in Botanica's Roses as" having flowers that are extremely long-lasting & open slowly both on the bush, and when picked."

Although still a youngster it has thrown up strong flowers in it's first season and I have a vase inside at the moment with flowers that have been in over a week and going strong.

It has a tight centre & is a lovely clear pink. It has stood up to the summer heat, and no black spot yet.

I am very impressed so far with this rose.

I misinterpeted the question!
I thought the person meant to strike cuttings.
In my experience the better they keep the less perfume they have as a rule because most of those that keep were specifically bred to last and not necessarily to have aroma. You can always spray the florist shop and the flowers too.

I like to fill a big vase with the same rose - it just looks so lush and rish.

Me too Barbara - I like to fill a big vase with the same rose - so I plant two or three of the same bush in the picking garden.
If you pick the buds when the sepals are just scrolling down you'll get an extra day or two in the vase.

Funny you mention the sepals scrolling down, has anyone noticed if you purchase roses from a florist and you get one or two without that happening, they do not open. When I was at the rose nursery we were not allowed to pick them unless they had 2 or 3 sepals starting to open.

I liked Elina so much that I have five or six growing so I can have a big vase full. Same with Charles de Gaulle. Another one that looks terrific in bulk is Diamond Jubilee.
I don't buy roses from florists.

I grow Elina which is now 7' tall x 5'6" wide. What a flower machine it is and so vigorous. Unfortunatly it doesn't have fragrance so that puts it in a class below Fire Fighter.

And I nearly bought Elina too! Instead I bought St patrick, hope it does well. I have high hopes for Pope John Paul 2. My plant aren't really established yet so I have to wait

You won't go wrong with St Patrick either.

St Patrick grows well for some people in Qld but not for me. From what I hear it needs a lot of feeding! I saw a splendid hedge of it outside a Baptist church in LA last May. I prefer Rose of Wagga Wagga

Bonita, your recommendation led me to check Rose of Wagga Wagga on HMF. Its entry says it has strong perfume but someone has commented that to their nose it has zero. What is your experience?

Yes it does have a strong perfume and my nose is not the greatest when it comes to perfume. So please don't ask me to describe it!

My St patrick seems to be really taking off and Pope John Paul 2 puts out the most beautiful white rose, it makes me want to go out and get another one. I wonder is Neptune good as a picking rose?

OK, so it would go against the my grain if I didn't plug any, if not all, the David Austin's I have ever grown

99% have perfume, charm and drop dead beauty.

some not much good for cutting though... I reckon they should grow 'Heritage' commercially for rose petals at weddings It can't seem to hang onto them so might as well use them for something

Dave mentioned the sepals scrolling down, something I've wouldn't know to look for when picking, now I'm out there checking for it! I'm really tempted to get the childrens rose but I think it gets quite big, is it bad for a rose if you keep their size down?

I grow the Children's Rose and it's a real beauty with a perfume that will lure you from some distance. It is quite big for me at about 4ft high and 3ft wide but I have hacked mine back a few times and it always bounces back. It's not much of a cut flower though (for me). The flowers tend not to last long in the vase. If you are constantly picking flowers for the vase it will keep its height down too.
