Re: List of ALL Australian bred roses on HMF
It gives me great pleasure to announce the Hunter Valley Regional Rose Society has chosen the late Trevor Grant bred hybrid tea Governor Macquarie as the regionals signature rose. Trevor is a former Regional Chairman of the Hunter Valley Regional who also bred Let's Celebrate and Our Golden Son. The Hunter Valley Regional is the second NSW regional to chose an Aussie (ABR) rose as its signature rose as the Nepean, Blue Mountains & Hawkesbury Regional Rose Society selected the Dawson bred floribunda Imp as its signature rose three years back.

Hi Neptune
If you would like to enhance your stable of roses for exhibiting particularly in the exhibition class I would suggest you purchase Governor Macquarie (Grant) if you don't already have it.

Re: List of ALL Australian bred roses on HMF
As you would be aware by my writings Trevor and I were quite good friends over the years and we talked a lot about his roses and more than likely he did tell me the breeding however like most my age I do suffer with a bit of "Old Timer's" disease and can't recall the breeding. It is registered, so somewhere it must be recorded. Leave it with me and I'll see what I can come up with. [justify]

Re: List of ALL Australian bred roses on HMF
Yesterday I received my final order of roses for the year in which were three of Bruce Chapman's latest commercialised rose Mornington. I first saw it on the show bench some years back as a seedling at a NRSA Rose Society held in Melbourne and was impressed with it. I am looking forward to having it on the show bench in the Australian bred class alongside Flemington Racecourse which is another Bruce Chapman bred floribundas.

Re: List of ALL Australian bred roses on HMF
Hi Maree at this stage I am not sure of Mornington's fragrance as I only just received my bare root bushes however the next time I speak to the breeder, Bruce Chapman, I will ask him and let you know.
Another Aussie (ABR) to come into my possession recently is a Paul Hains bred mini flora named Lenny. Only recently registered the rose is named after Queensland nonagenarian rosarian Lenny Johnstone.

Maree the fragrance is Mornington's strength but it is susceptible to powdery mildew in some areas. This comes straight from the breeder's mouth.

John if you can get hold of Flemington RAcecourse in WA it is definitely a show winner. In NSW the most prolific Aussies (ABR)show winners are:- Flemington Racecourse, Imp and Joyce ABounding.

Re: List of ALL Australian bred roses on HMF
roseman my wife and I only have about 10% Aussies however I would like to change that however I have run out of room. We are essentially exhibitors and most of my roses are those that win on the show bench. Until recently Australia bred roses were not popular with judges however due to the work of the ARF supported by the Rose Society of NSW this is changing. Of the exotic roses I grow I have a particular affection for Joyfulness which has given us many championship ribbons as well as one grand champion ribbon. Other exotic roses that have won us ribbons include Bridal Pink, Happy Anniversary, Elina, Imperator, White Spray and Tineke to mention the ones I can remember.

Doug, like you, I have not space available and the wifey won't let me fill in the pool, so I can put more roses in......

Re: List of ALL Australian bred roses on HMF
As a winner of the Davis Award for the best Australian bred rose in the National Trial Grounds puts 100 Not Out in very elite company and indicates it is a great rose for Australian conditions as are most of the Walsh bred roses. To gain an award such as the Davis Award roses are judged using the following assessment criteria so it can be seen for a rose to win an award they must be good all round performers.
1. Habit (first impressions). 30 marks
a. Attractive, well balanced specimen to suit the type of plant, be it a climber, bush, shrub, miniature or ground cover.
b. Plant should be well clothed with foliage as typical of its type (climber, bush, shrub, etc.) and flowers and/or buds or hips nicely presented to view as typical of type.
2. Health. (Foliage and flowers) 20 marks
a. Health and vigour. Refers to ready production of new shoots and robustness appropriate to the type of plant.
b. Hardiness. Tolerance to weather throughout the season (eg: heat, wind, rain).
3. Flowering. 30 marks
a. Beauty of bloom/buds and/or cluster. Symmetry of bloom through bud stage to fully open, attractive, well balanced sprays or clusters.
b. Abundance of flowering – blooms and/or buds. Attractive display well placed over plant as typical of type, ability to repeat flower or continuous flowering.
4. Pest and disease tolerance. 20 marks
a. Fungal diseases – Evidence of mildew, Blackspot and/or rust.
b. Pest tolerance – Aphids, spider mite, grubs.
5. Fragrance. 10 marks
a. Strength.
b. Sweetness.
Although a little too busy because of the background the new photo probably shows the rose better than my feeble attempts at using photoshop.

Re: List of ALL Australian bred roses on HMF
Last Friday I was in the Hunter Valley at Maitland and this brought to mind my last trip up to the Hunter Valley when I had the pleasure of meeting nonagenarian rose breeder Marguerite Parkes. Although this time at Maitland I didn't get to see Marguerite I did see her newest rose creation William's Son which I believe to be a worthy addition to collection which is made up of, Pink Angel , Jenny Brown, Lisa Colfax, Starscent and Sharon Louise?. At this stage I don't have a picture of William's Son however I do have new photo of Pink Angel for those interested in Australian Bred roses.
