Here is a list of ALL Australian bred roses on HMF. Because it's a link to a search function I'm hoping that it will be self-updating: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] - In the 'Breeding' category select Australia as the country of breeder to bring up the list.

The latest "The Rose Breeder" (of Aus) mentions that Laurie Newman has a list of 800 Aus-breds or Aus-raised (ie sports), which were registered. The editor is asking for info re parks or private gardens or nurseries that grow a range (perhaps 8 or more varieties) of Aus-bred or Aus-raised roses. He's Douglas Gregory, dgregory24 and the rest of the email address is @bigpond.com.

Of the Australian roses I have grown and shown I would recommend Imp (Dawson), Flemington Racecourse(Chapman), Our Rosamond(Bell), Governor Macquarie(Grant).

A miniature rose which has been a Grand Champion at the Sydney Royal Easter Show comes onto the market this year. The rose bred by Dr Bruce Chapman is Joyce Abounding and on what I have seen it is a must for both exhibitors and the general public alike.

Thanks, Ausrose, that's a great list. I've already checked out your particular recommendations on HMF. Do you mind telling us approximately where you are located? It gives one a better idea whether the roses that do well for you are likely to do so on the home patch.

Have you given Mawson a go? That one is on my must-try list this winter.

Would be a shame to lose the Aussies and for that reason have collected and propagated some for sale of the following.

*Accolade, April Hamer,* Argosy, Cecily Lascelles, *City of Benalla, Claret Cup, Countrywoman,*Delicious, *Ethel Dawson, Esmeralda, Gay Vista, Gladsome, Golden Dawn, Golden Dawn Clg, Governor Macquarrie, *Headline, Honey Flow, Ida Elizabeth, Jenny Brown, Lady Edgeworth David, Lady Huntingfield, Lady Mann, Lorraine Lee, *Lorraine Lee Clg, Lubra, Megan Louise, Pink Angel, Red Nella, Shadow, *Tania Verstack, The Australian Bi-Centennial Rose, Titian, Williams Rose, Zara Hore Ruthven.

There are others mostly sports like*Roundelay Clg. etc.

The ones prefixed with a * are doing well on the East Coast here in Sydney. *Delicious is the standout minni ( Flower Machine).
*Ethel Dawson, *Headline, *City of Benalla, *Tania Verstack, *Argosy and *Lorraine Lee Clg, are a must.

Please don't let them become lost and make room for them in your garden.

Maybe you could upload some pix to HMF, Bruce? I just went there to check out Ethel Dawson, only to find they have no pix at all.

Meryl, thanks for the reminder, will get on the job when this rain stops.

There are a few new roses mentioned in the list above that will no doubt do well here but need more time to accurately assess performance. 'Williams Rose' is Mrs Parkes latest named after her late husband, it's early days and too early to comment.
WR is reported to be a very good cut flower producer.

Bruce,
Deliciouse is a very pretty rose , I love it.
I am lead to believe that Mini's are the flavour of the month at the moment and with the small gardens around Sydney they would be very popular.

After growing Delicious(Welsh) for more than 15years I would rate it an outstanding miniature. Bred by the late Eric Welsh of Erina NSW Delicious grows like a weed, blooms profusely and is relatively disease resistant. Other Welsh miniature roses include Eric the Red, Tracy Wickham and Wee Beth.

Roseman in all, my wife I have in the vicinity of 350 roses which are principally for showing.Of these I have 23 different miniatures these being:- Child's Play, Figurine, Irresistible, Ellie, Party Girl, Benardella Ruby, Baby Boomer, Carrot Top, Delicious(Welsh),Joyce Abounding (Chapman),Red Gem (Chapman),Millie Watters, New Hampshire, Baby Jack, Hilde,Loving Touch, Radiant, Holy Toleo, Lavender Lace, Pettie Folie , Pink Porcellan and Teddy Bear. my top three for exhibiting to date have been Delicious, Figurine and Baby Boomer. I am expecting big things from Joyce Abounding (Chapman), Irresistible and Childs Play. With respect to the hybrid teas Tineke, Moonstone and Louisa Jane have given us success while floribundas Imp (Dawson), Bridal Pink Pink Parfait and Imperator have given us grand champions. We are expecting big things of Brass Band, City of Goulburn and Daybreaker.

Pleased everyone likes 'Delicious' it's almost a small bush rose or a large minature. It is registered as a minature. We have grown it since 1985 in a 24" pot. Would probably have two propagated at the moment.

At the recent Royal Agricultural Society Rose Shows held as part of the Sydney Royal Easter Show the three champion Australian bred roses were:- NSW Championships Day 1 Flemington Racecourse (Chapman), RAS Day 2 Joyce Abounding (Chapman) and RAS Day 3 Imp (Dawson).

In what was a record a vase of the cultivar Apricot Nectar was the Grand Champion of each of the three shows.

Neutral Bay rosarian Mark McGuire was the outstanding exhibitor of the Sydney Royal Easter Show winning a record 20 ribbons of the 34 champion ribbons on offer.

Like the majority of leading NSW exhibitors Mark McGuire uses Sudden Impact for Roses.

Ausrose, good to see some exhibition imformation, specially the recent Sydney Royal. I went out on the first day (Saturday), saw some very well prepared roses and poultry. Peter Smith from Tamworth showed a magnificent White Pekin Female to win top honours.
The highlight was accompaning my daughter, she is also into Pekins and roses. We had lunch in the dineing hall at the Members Pavillion overlooking the ring events. Would suggest joining the RAS as their facilities make a trip to the show much more enjoyable.

I collected Delicious in the early 1980's and now propagate it. Very healthy pink bloom machine which is very desireable for Sydney's smaller gardens and balconies.

David, it's the one bred by Eric Welsh (Australian). Look on HMF for all the details. It's one of those really good roses that is no longer available in the nurseries. You probably know I based my nursery stocks on the best from the 1800 and 1900's. This requires a lot of research and experience culling the duds.
One of our large rose specialist nurseries list 127 roses as being healthy and very suitable for gardens. I have been through their list and can only find 17 that I would consider very healthy.
Based on the above I can fully recomend 'Delicious' bred by Eric Welsh.

Before one purchases a rose it is better to actually see the rose as sometimes photos can be quite misleading. One of the problems associated with Aussies (ABR) very few of them are about in places where they can be seen so often purchasing an Australian bred rose becomes like buying a pig in a poke. These days however there are a number of gardens scattered throughout Australia that do have quite a few Aussies (ABR) on public show and are well worth a visit.

One such garden Victoria State Rose Garden that has over 50 Aussies (ABR) as well as both modern and heritage roses form all over the world. The Victoria State Rose Garden situated in Werribee is one of the tourist gems of Victoria and was Awarded the International Garden of Excellence by the World Federation Of Rose Societies in 2003.

Aussies on show at Werribee include:- Alien Brundrett, Alister Clark, Angela Taylor, Annie's Song, April Hamer, Australia Felix, Australian Beauty, Australian Sunrise, Ballerina, Betty, Blackboy, Borderer, Brisbane Blush, Carabella, Cherub, Cicely Lascelles, Claret Cup, Countrywoman, Daydream, Eliza Dorothy, Esmeralda, Evening Glow, Fintona, Gladsome, Honeyflow, Howard Florey, Iced Parfait, Ida Elizabeth, Imp, In The Pink, Jesse Clark, Kitty Kininmonth, Kwinana, Lady Huntingfield, Lady Medallist, Light Touch, Lisa Colfax, Lorraine Lee, Lubra, Marjorie Atherton, Marjory Palmer, Mary Guthrie, Milkmaid, Minnie Watson, Miss All Australian Beauty, Miss Marion Manifold, Nancy Hayward, Onkaparinga, Our Rosamund, Penelope, Peter Benjamin, Princeps, Rae Dungan, Ringlet, , Shadow, Squatters’ Dream, Suitor, Sunlit, Sunny South, Susan Lotthe, Sybil Hipkin, Titian, Tonners’ Fancy, Victoria Gold, Warrawee, Water Music, Woman's Day

Other Australian Gardens containing a significant number of Aussies(ABR) include South Australian Botanical Gardens (SA), Kodja Place Kojonup (WA) and Morwell Gardens (Vic.) to mention a few.
