List of ALL Australian bred roses on HMF

The third rose bred by the late Trevor Grant is the South Australian Centenary Rose Let's Celebrate. Trevor was a personal friend and I have all three these being cuttings from the original roses. I know the Red Cross Rose is not Australian bred however it is marketed by Ross Roses the home of Australian bred roses. I am not sure of Go For Gold. Happy Anniversary is a sport of Kardinal that was registered by Graeme Catt a NSW nurseryman.

Recently while conducting a rose talk for a local garden club I was asked what is an Australian raised rose is as opposed to an Australian bred rose. The term Australian raised rose is an all embracing term for Australian bred roses e.g. Amazing Grace(Chapman) and roses that sported in Australia e.g. Happy Anniversary. In rose shows all sports are shown in the general classes this includes roses sported in Australia. For the uninitiated a sport is a mutation.

Although the smaller of the three outstanding rose gardens in Victoria the Morwell Memorial Centenary Rose Garden is the most unique having been built in a disused saleyards in the town itself.

A specialised Australian and New Zealand breeders' section was planted out in 1994. This showcases a composite of rose breeding with a particular emphasis on early and contemporary Victorian breeders including a selection of Alister Clark roses. It contains both historical and modern Australasian bred roses. This is one of the few public displays of its kind throughout Australia. - MCRG website

I visited the  Morwell Centenary Rose Garden in 2009 with the AQ when she opened the inaugural Morwell Rose Show and what an exhilarating experience it was to see the gardens for the first time. Later in 2009 the AQ accepted the Award of Garden Excellence at the World Convention in Vancouver on Morwell's behalf. Although it is too late in the season to get photographs of roses in bloom I'd love to get photos of Australian roses in bloom at Morwell come Spring however I am not sure I can fit it in to my schedule this year. Does anyone know the champion rose?

Bruce Chapman has registered 15 roses. A few years back I interviewed Bruce for an article I was writing on Australian bred roses and he told me he felt his best rose was Amazing Grace. Many Rosarians I have contact with believe  Amazing Grace to be in the same class as Pope John Paul 11 and that's a big wrap. Personally I think Flemington Racecourse is Bruce's best rose closely followed by Joyce Abounding.
