Re: Rosa hirtula
There is seed available at B&T World Seeds( [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] ]It's on the allowable imports list so I'm thinking of ordering some.

Re: Rosa hirtula
I just looked r. hirtula up on HMF & I like it a lot!
I have been thinking about buying seed in of some unusual roses!

Re: Rosa hirtula
Have another look on HMF Damo at the zone range for this species!!! This is why I want it.
Re: Rosa hirtula
OMG the site sure is as you say!
Will go and have a look at the zone range now...

Re: Rosa hirtula
If I can seed from them then I don't care about their stupid website.. but it isn't very 'intuitive'
Re: Rosa hirtula
So does 6b through 11 mean it can take a fair bit of cold but it thrives in the heat?

Re: Rosa hirtula
Yep - means it has a really wide tolerance range... so if one was trying for a good all-rounder rose maybe this one has something to offer
Re: Rosa hirtula
It looks pretty interesting actually. I like the look of it. I have no idea how one would use it to begin with but you are good at that Simon! Suggestions?

Re: Rosa hirtula
It's in the Synstylae so I was thinking diploid wichurana hybrids and maybe clinophylla and bracteata. Will put it with the 0-47-19 seedlings which will be diploid.
Re: Rosa hirtula
Oh OK I was going to say wichuraiana but that was all I could come up with. LOL I think your other suggestions are on the right track too. I am becoming more interested with species roses again after years of ignoring them. I recently bought gigantea, brunoii & a few others are on order!

Re: Rosa hirtula
Gigantea is just starting to take off here... still green... as is laevigata.. Laevigata might be another one to play with using hirtula...
Re: Rosa hirtula
From what I remember laevigata is a lovely rose (I know how much you love it Simon!) but it never took off here & finally died so I never got to see it in full flight. It was bought & planted during drought conditions so little wonder...
I think I recall seeing a pic of laevigata that you posted Simon (from a previous house?) & it was stunning! I think it would cross very nicely with r. hirtula!

Re: Rosa hirtula
Yes... if I could only have one rose... it would be laevigata... you need to grow it own root Damo... it's wild that way and suckers like crazy but that's the way I like it.
Re: Rosa hirtula
My laevigata was grafted & I can imagine it would be much nicer own root. I will try it again someday.
Speaking of faves, I cut my 'Charlotte Armstrong' back today ready to be moved! I hope she makes it; I took some cuttings just in case! LOL
If she dies there will be tears...

Re: Rosa hirtula
I have three laevigata here... two grafted and one own root.. the grafted ones get planted below the graft so they become own root in a short time.

Re: Rosa hirtula
See the seed parent of 'Charlotte Armstrong' ; 'Sister Therese'? I have OP seedlings of this coming up now
Re: Rosa hirtula
You have a lot of interesting stuff Simon; I am very envious in the nicest of ways! None of this >>> going on!

Re: Rosa hirtula
Damo how much wood of Laevigata do you want. there is one down at the old rose nursery that I worked which measures about 5x3x2 metres. If you want some let me know.
