Re: Bearded Iris and roses
We had a blue bloom on a smallish Iris just today but with the rain so I will have a look at it again tomorrow.
I reckon the latter the better, so they co-incide with the roses blooming.
How are you feeling now, Carole ?

Re: Bearded Iris and roses
Thank you Karen I am very well now, we will have to meet up again soon or at least have a chat on the phone Did you take a pic of your blue iris?
Gary it sounds like you will do alright with your Iris's, we have only German Iris's and median and tall bearded iris's.
Simon did you have any luck collecting seed from yours ? I diddn't

Re: Bearded Iris and roses
I sowed about 100 seeds, Carole. No germinations yet though.. not too confident I will either.
Re: Bearded Iris and roses
Simon some seeds take forever to germinate so maybe there is still hope.
I want to try it again this year with the aim of getting different Iris colours.
Question, as I havn't yet checked how to do it. Did you use fresh seed or did you dry it first ?

Re: Bearded Iris and roses
The reason I'm not hopeful is I'm not sure the seeds were fully ripe... we had problems with wind and slugs last season eating the seed stems off and blowing them flat. I saved a few that looke4d almost ready but I'm not sure they were old enough. I dried them first because I wanted to stratify them at the same time as the rose seeds and sow them in spring.
Re: Bearded Iris and roses
I just had a quick look at Gardenweb and there is some info on there. It looks like you are on the right track. I will read more and have a go with ours this year.

Something different

I didn't record the parentage. This is the first iris seedling to appear from 2010 pollinations... also the first iris seedling I've ever seen

I have only put 2 on so as not to bore everyone.
How are yours going Simon?

Re: Bearded Iris and roses
I should have some spare bits after it has finished flowering.. it's a little one that I think would look really nice in a large bowl shaped pot.
Re: Bearded Iris and roses
Hello all,
Long time no speak! Sorry I have neglected this forum shamefully.
After last year's disastrous rose season I got rather disheartened with them, plus I have had a lot more eye trouble which shortens the time I can spend on the computer.
Anyway, my roses have done a lot better than I expected them to I'm happy to say. I did lose half a dozen or so to the downy mildew and a lot of the survivors are quite small still, but at least they did survive!
The Iris department in my garden has been very gratifying this year. The ones that fared badly in the beds have gone very well in pots. I am still collecting new plants as they are my current obsession.
Here are a few photos.

There are lots and LOTS of photos but this is enough for now.
PS
Please disregard the occasional touch of leafspot etc.

Thankyou Simon, it's good to find you still here [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
I have been trying to improve my photography, and used a tripod today.
I think it helps.

I think I am glad the weather is too hot for bearded iris in QLd, or I think I would get addicted to growing those as well!
They are stunning

Re: Bearded Iris and roses
How hot does it get . It must be very hot.
Here in Mudgee we get 40 plus at times in the summer but mostly high 20's to mid 30's.
The biggest problem I would think is if you get a long wet time that could rot the tubers.
Here are a couple of mine

Re: Bearded Iris and roses
Where we are we often get 6 or seven days in a row of 40+
I thought it had to get reasonable cold in the winter for them to bloom? we do get long spells sometimes of wet weather, but I also have really heavy clay soil. (This is more like trying to convince myself that they won't grow here because I can see myself ending up with tooooooo many )
