Tempo Two Iris Farm

I had a lot of fun there today and took some pics for you to have a look at.

I only bought 3 Tall bearded - Blackware, Cherry Glen and Fleur Delight.
I bought 3 Pacific Coast Irises too.
Their plants are far from cheap, but they are very advanced, healthy and strong

Oh Val...i AM jealous !!!!!! I dare to say that something this beautiful wouldn't grow in my warm climate. Please say they will !!!!!!

Sorry Mate... not a chance Unless you dig them up each year and stick them in the fridge for 3-4 months Then they won't flower much either because newly planted ones usually don't flower. Never mind... you can grow a whole lot of things we can't too... some of the gingers might be a good alternative to these.

Beautiful photos Val. I wonder how they keep their rows so weed free? They must spend all their days just walking the rows chipping weeds

Simon, I think they use a lot of Fusilade on broadleaf crops.
David ( Roseman ) should be the expert on this as it's used a lot in vineyards

I use it on my conifer bed; the prostrate junipers can end up ruined if you don't do something about the couch.

I dare say there's a heck of a lot of weeding and tarting up before the Open weekends!! The ones in the field in bloom were all early ones of course, the farm is open 3 more times to include the middle and late season irises.
I was very pleased that at the last minute I found the exact one I'd been searching for, and in a pot and in bud!!!! It's called Pond Lily, all pink and mauve and frilly

Dave, orchids are very very addictive too! You can grow some beauties up there that us Southerners can't. We might get very jealous!!!

Bruce, I am not sure your reply is correct or worded right, Grasses are monocots. Broadleaf weeds generally belong to dicot family. Below is part of the front of Fusilade label. I have not looked at which family Iris live in, will do that tonight. The weed control at the nursery could be done with a pre-emergence called Trefuralin, (spelling) Stomp, or a post emergence called "Sprayseed" it is a contact spray and not systemic. This might sound "mumbo jumbo" to some. If spraying for weeds there can be a specific chemical found if anyone would like the link to it. Regards David.

Hi Val. Some of the orchids are amazing as i have grown a few over the years. I think i'll stay with roses for the time being...so much to learn !! My new book, Tea Roses...Old Roses for Warm Gardens has arrived at last so i'm going to have my nose in the book every spare chance i get.

Roseman David, would Fusilade be safe to use near roses do you know? My main enemy is couch all year round.

No... s'ok David. I understood what Bruce said to mean a selective herbicide for use in broadleaf crops on grass-like weeds. I just don't like to use any chemicals in the garden... couch can be controlled by using a deep mulch layer. I've found couch would prefer to travel just under the mulch than under the ground if given the chance which makes pulling it out an easier task. Our twitch is like that... it's my number one weed enemy and its a variety of couch. If I dig a deep gutter around the beds the twitch finds it more difficult to invade and if I don't make the beds too narrow then it has trouble sneaking under my radar into the beds... I think there is something intrinsically wrong, either in home gardens or in comemercial systens, when you have to intervene with chemicals of any kind.

I use Fusilade around my roses.

I did use it about 3 years ago on narrow leaf grasses, killed most everything except the roses.
I will never use a bucket or sprayer that has had Roundup in it even if it has been washed many times. If you use Fusilade then buy a sprayer exclusifully for that and don't use the washed out roundup sprayer.

I fully agree with Ozeboy. We have separate sprayers for Fusilade, Zero, WeednFeed and Triforine. We learned the hard way.

Oh Val, how lovely. Several of theirs are on my wishlist, including that top one. Waiting for the price to come down.

My newly planted ones are budding up.....nine so far. I thought I might have to wait a year to see what i have here.

the first to open out is Noble Contessa. lovely lilac standard with purple falls.

We may have trouble with bearded iris but we can grow louisina iris. SOme of hem are just as good as the others.
