Difference between Rambling Rose and Climbing Rose
Hi everyone.
Until this winter I have never had a rambler growing in my garden. This winter I bought about five. So whilst planting the ramblers I thought I know not much about them and did a google search. But no informaton beats the knowledge of the experts who have a hands on experience with ramblers and the climbers.
Is it true that The Rambling Rose has a number of unique qualities which sets it apart from the Climbing Rose.
1. Ramblers have blooms in clusters of seven and the climbers have clusters of five.
2. The leaves of the ramblers are in groups of seven and the climbers have groups of five.
3. Over 90% of the ramblers will only floer once whereas the Climbers will flower repeatedly.
4. The stems/canes of the rambling roses are more flexible than the Climbers, so they are much easier to train on any choosen surface.
5. Ramblers can be grown as ground cover but the Climbers can not.
6. Ramblers have fewer thorns compared to the Climbers.
7. The tips of the thorns of the ramblers are bent away from the stem so that the rambler can hook itself onto the host medium it is trying to ramble on. The climbers have straight tipped thorns.
and
8. There are three different types of Ramblers: the Sempervirens, the Multiforas and the Wichuranas. What is the diffenece between these three?
Then how about the climbers?
Can you add more to the list?

Re: Difference between Rambling Rose and Climbing Rose
Way more detailed than what I would have contemplated!
For me: Ramblers will eat your house and only flower once in Spring.
Climbers are more sedate and often flower more than once in a year.
Thorns... well..... I think you'll find a lot of "man-eaters" amongst the ramblers... LOL
Hope that helps.

Re: Difference between Rambling Rose and Climbing Rose
Thanks for that Alya. I more or less knew about one of those (the flowering in spring though some of ours spot flower most of the year).
I will have to take more notice about these things.

You are welcome Ausrose and Belinbear. Like you I just want to know more about the roses especialy how to correctly identify them. It is nice when everyone say what they know and observe about their climbers and ramblers and not just relying on the text books and especially just the Google search engine.
I have got so many conflicting questions and answers. I need to find my way round.
For instance I have three Red Max Graf Rose. helpmefind.com, Daves Garden and everyrose.com refer to it as bush. My Red Max Graf has got flexible and arching canes. I grow it as a ground cover as well as climber. It has 7 leaves single petals, once flowering in late summer - all of the rambling rose features according to google search results. It copes very well with very dappled shade in my garden. Yet it is called Climber. Why? I don't know.
Here is the pics of my Red Max Graf in the shade:

I like your guy! Never feels tired from clapping.
I am based in Bedfordshire. Aylesbury is about 40 minutes driving, St Albans is half an hour and Harkness Roses about 70 minutes drive. 20 minutes drive to Luton Airport. From our house we hear the wolves and elephants at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo which is 40 minutes walk from home.

I know where you are! I lived in Surrey/Hampshire, very near where they film "Downton Abbey".

We lived in Surrey too. Then in order to be nearer to and keep an eye on our elderly parents we moved to Bedfordshire. Now instead of one hour drive on the motorways M5 and M1 from Surrey we spend only 15 minutes on the road with a lovely contryside scene to Mum and Dad's house..
Do you intend to visit England? Perhaps we would meet.

Re: Difference between Rambling Rose and Climbing Rose
My limited understanding (without googling) is that Sempervirens ramblers are generally evergreen, particularly in our warmer climate. Wichuranas are more suited to a warm climate and were used in the breeding of Australian roses by Alister Clark.
I have used rambling roses alongside Hybrid Tea climbers on several large arches in our garden, expecting that the rambling roses will provide quicker coverage along with a Spring burst of colour. The climbers will continue to flower from Spring through to Autumn. That's the plan!!

Re: Difference between Rambling Rose and Climbing Rose
Sounds a great idea to me Rosebud! Wish I'd thought of that when I put in my climbers this last winter. There are many ramblers I love.
Alya, if I come back to the UK for a visit, we can almost certainly get together! That would be great! However, no plans at the moment. Will let you know!

Re: Difference between Rambling Rose and Climbing Rose
AuutmnDamask Because I have few climbers behaving similar if not the same as the rambler I read about- like Danse De feu Zepherine Drouhin and Red Max Graf. They are almost evergreen in my back garden even in the climate we have here in England.AutumnDamask wrote:Way more detailed than what I would have contemplated!

What remblers do you have if you dont mind me asking? How do you grow them? What are theconditions they grow in apart from the hot weaher you have got at your side of the world?
i just want to be able to identify the climber/ramblers and possibly their parentage - who was the daddy and the mommy- what features came up strong from the ancestry and so on. The text books and google are baund to be limited to some extend . No one can beat the experience of the growers.
I would love to hear your experience with the rambler and with the roses in general if you don't mind
