WOW!!!!! Well, what can I say! I'm blown away! You are SOOOOO clever silky. Well done. I love your poppies - can I be very cheeky and ask if you would give me a seed pod or tell me where I can get that particular one. Have been looking for it for ages and eventually gave up an ordered a lovely pink one! I'll do you a seed swop if you like!

Re: The colours of my garden
Hi Sue, I'm more than happy to give you some poppy seeds from last year's crop. Just scatter them where you want (better if soil is broken up a bit) and you'll soon have them growing hither and yon. They are lovely when in bloom, bees goes berserk over them. I leave them long enough to go to seed then use them as mulch. Makes great compost.

Re: The colours of my garden
Silky, Margaret Merrill has always been one of my favorites since I first saw it twenty years ago, and I believe it to be a better rose than 'Iceberg'. Guess what i do not have it. Note to self, "add to next years list".
Silky or others that grow 'Frances Dubreuil', how do you find it?
Gold Bunny is IMO a very good rose, great strong yellow colour. How do you find it's growth Silky ?
Silky well done on your garden, great shots. What going into the new one ?

Re: The colours of my garden
Hi Lazy bones. Frances Dubreuil is a delicate looking rose, twiggy growth, low growing and quite floriferous. I've just noticed that mine has a nice strong cane coming through so she might bulk up a bit. Photos don't do justice to its unusual dark red flowers, almost a black red. However they don't last long and turn a rusty red, almost like dried blood! Sounds gross but when grown with something light coloured the effect is quite nice. Healthy so far, no spraying here.
Gold Bunny is a good all round rose. Quick to repeat, solitary blooms. Not a rose for cutting as they don't last. A really acid yellow that stands out in the garden. Mine is average height, doesn't often develop new canes, but then I don't fuss around it. Extremely healthy.
My new bed faces south east and is fairly shady so no roses. I'm planning gardenias, daphne, azaleas, mollis azaleas, hellebores, ozmanthus, ginger lily and cliveas. Also I want to try a small water bowl with maybe a water lily, as I scored an old copper boiler. Oh well that's the plan, remains to be seen if it comes off. Lol.

Re: The colours of my garden
Pssst.... Hey, Silky's Garden, I've made this offer before, and this year I'm adding heaps more to the already extremely large cash inducement:
Oh silky's not a bad sort, but I am so much more deserving of you. Chauffeur-driven flatbed truck on call. Only say the word...

Re: The colours of my garden
Silkyfizz, add a pieris or "lily-of-the-valley" bush to that last bed that faces south-east. They are so beautiful when they're flowering and the don't grow too tall. They go well with hellebores and gardenias.

Re: The colours of my garden
Haha Betsy, you crack me up. Might change your mind when you see my house though! My garden says it's considering.
Thank you Barbara for that suggestion. I hadn't thought of pieris. It would fit in nicely, especially its white flowers. With Clivea's orange flowers I want mainly white/cream tones amid lush green.

Re: The colours of my garden
For those scent hounds out there, and I know you're one Betsy, have you come across Soeur Emmanuelle? The scent is divine (to me anyway). Has a touch of anise and is quite complex but I bought it for its fragrance alone. First flowers are just opening and I'm draw to sniff several times a day. If you get a chance check it out.

Re: The colours of my garden
And here's a really remarkable aspect of teh soon-to-be-mine silky's garden: I don't believe she sprays. The chemical fungi-slayers, I mean. Yet she has a really superb array of Modern roses in a state of repair that could make every rose a poster child for swing tags.
Her horticultural skills and good variety choices - although there are some tricky HTs in that collection - seem to have conquered all . Or maybe it's her sweet disposition. I need to get me some skills and some better disposition..

I now need Soeur Emmanuelle. I love anise and clove scents to pieces. Those, and the sweet/honeysuckle notes.

Re: The colours of my garden
God Betsy you just made me blush (in tones of Fragrant Cloud no less).
Yep I hate chemicals and try to provide a haven for lots of insects and birds. Also being very lazy I just can't be fagged fiddling with the sprayer, which hates me with a passion. Just went out to take a picture of the Soeur and squished 2 grubs. I consider myself a grub whisperer!
Betsy you will LOVE her!

Re: The colours of my garden
Lovely suggestion Barbara. You could also consider a Syringa bush silky. Give you some lovely green tones with the scent of the white flowers. Just a humble thought!

Thanks Sue, that's a thought. I have a large lilac in another area but a compact white would look good there.
