it was unintended..the parsnip sap contains furocoumarins and this is what causes the phyto-photodermatitis. Once the furocoumarins are absorbed by the skin, they are activated by UV light and they then bind to DNA and cell membranes and destroys cells and your skin. I knew about it in wild parsnips but hadn't come across it in my garden plants until Christmas (must have been for the Christmas roast come to think about it)..thanks for all of your concerns - hariet~rose
