Roses Down Under
At the moment the African Queen and I are in Palmerston North NZ attending the Roses Down Under WFRS Conference. Yesterday we attended the NZ National Rose Show that is part of the proceedings. The display of flowers was absolutely brilliant and I have many photos I will put up when I get back to Sydney next week. In NZ the blooms grow much bigger than back home and the colours are stronger over here the general opinion seems to be is this is because of the cooler climate and volcanic soil. Last night we attended the presentation dinner

Re: Roses Down Under
I spent sometime with Doug Grant last night but haven't encountered any other breeders as yet. It would appear "Big Sam" isn't in attendance.

Re: Roses Down Under
David today we went to the Dugald Mackenzie Rose Garden at Palmerston North and attended the New Zealand Trial Gound Awards Ceremony. While there I interviewed Rob Somerfield one of the major winners for the Australia Rose Annual. I have many photos of the blooms and you wouldn't believe the size and colour of them, the growth of the bushes in the trial grounds and the number of blooms on each bush.

Betsy - As soon so get home to Sydney next week will post the best of the photos the AQ and I took.
Hot off the Press - The three major winners at the trials announced yesterday are:- Gold Star of the South Pacific - A russet red shrub with yellow stamens bred by David Kenny of Ireland. Nola Simpson Novelty Award - Bright as Button a pale pink floribunda with a striking deep pink centre bred bred by Chris Warner of England. The "Peoples Choice Award" went to a cream/green floribunda bred by Rob Somerfield this rose edged out a salmon/apricot floribunda named My Mum which I was more than impressed with.

Re: Roses Down Under
Oh, I am envious! Sounds fabulous. Look forward to those pictures, next week.
By the way, have you seen any Teas growing on your travels in NZ? Love to know how they do there compared to warmer Aus. climates ... or maybe too cold in NZ?

Re: Roses Down Under
To date I haven't come across any tea roses and the like as the gardens we have visited have made up essentially of hybrid teas and floribundas.

P
David to date I haven't viewed any David Austin roses however today the AF is visiting Cheops Garden where there are listed both modern and heritage roses so when she arrives back to our hotel tonight where I am presently recuperating from an asthma attack she may have some information. An interesting fact about Cheops Gardens is there a special garden made up of McGredy roses for visitors to enjoy.

Re: Roses Down Under
Thanks Doug, hope you get over the asthma attack quickly, is it to many roses to look at which brings it on
I was wondering about bloom size, cooler areas of the world "seem" to have larger flowers

Re: Roses Down Under
David on average the roses I've seen have been significantly bigger than in Australia. When I get back home next week I put up photos that will show what I mean about size of NZ roses.

Re: Roses Down Under
Doug, are you saying the rose was bred by McCready or in a bed of roses ? There is a rose by Meilland's,

Re: Roses Down Under
I was under the impression the roses we saw were bred by Big Sam according to a name plate however it was second hand information as I didn't actually see the name plate so I could have relayed incorrect information. I will check it out.

Re: Roses Down Under
I have checked it out on a photograph the AF took and Leonardo da Vinci is a Meilland rose not a McCredy rose as I had indicated.
