Nice variety there Jordan.

The form and colour similarity between your Chianti and my baby Young Lycidas is striking, jordan, from the blooms right down to the wide spacing between leaf nodes. Wonder if there is a line of development there. Is this a "style" of Austin? I'm not very au fait with DAs, beyond Tamora, Jude and William Skakespeare.

i find lots of reds to purple to mr austin roses are very similar .. i think he is achieving the colour depth that he wants .. you got falstaff, the dark lady, the prince , the squire.munstead wood.tradescant.william shakespeare amongest others that have the same colour depth.. altho have to say with the new varieties of dark reds to purple shades arent very fragrant .. but they are IMO a lot healthier then the old varieties .

Jordan, I would be interested to know which of those DA's reds/purples you mention you would recommend for colour, form of bush, health, vigour and fragrance? I want to create a narrow bed beside front drive so they would have to be compact growers. Any ideas?

compact and healthy.. well i gotta say . i found munstead wood and the dark lady free of disease.and portmerion and tradescant .. try them silky .. they are healthy here . perfume wise portmerion is the best

Finally a Tuscany Superb, it’s a little lighter than I thought. How’s the fragrance and how does it compare with the Austins, say Munstead Wood? And how do you find the fragrance of Princess Alexandra of Kent?
I can’t possibly imagine what you yard must look like, but I’m picturing a nursery …

hi jac, tuscany superb gets darker ..as the flower ages .. the perfume is strong .. its weird to describe to me it smells like myrrth and tea roses and at times it smells fruity on a warm night. its much nicer perfume then munstead wood and to me munstead doesn't have strong perfume .. princess alexandra of kent has a fruity scent with hint of raspberry .. lol my boss at work came out to my place the other day and she said i have more roses here then she does at the nursery

Ah, TuscanyS smells at night, wonderful; I’ve been dreaming of having this rose in my garden and look forward to it next year. I think MunsteadW has a pleasant deep fragrance, but the highlights are missing to give it a strong fragrance rating, the bloom and colour are very nice, too, and I want to wait and see how the whole bush develops over time before commenting further. PrincesAK is always on the stronger Austin lists when I’m looking for fragrance appraisals. Would you agree with that?

I noticed on HMF Francis Dubreuil is a tea that grows only to 60-90 cm tall width 80cm. Would this be right? Don't teas normally grow much larger? If it stays this small I wouldn't mind having it. I really like the look of it. Also what size blooms are we talking about? Jordan how would describe the fragrance? HMF says moderate, how is yours?

Silky, have you got the Tea book by the the Tea Bags from WA, interesting reading about what it is or what it could be.

No I don't Roseman, did borrow something from the library a few weeks ago but is the author really Tea Bags? Are you pulling my leg?

silky, thats correct francis D only grows to 3x 2 it is a small rose .. the dark blooms are beautifull to look at and they are medium size .. as far as health goes, it is pretty healthy . it loves the sun too..
i have to dissagree with HMF regarding the fragrance , it is very fragrant almost identical to papa meilland and more so maybe little stronger i have my two on each side so i can enjoy their strong scent

yes silky , my PAOK is new, bought it this year. it is its first blooms.. spewing i coudnt make it to the rose society show grrrrrrrrrrr..

you would have loved it Jordan. Big winner was Victoria Gold, but there were so many fabulous roses to look at. Many I made note of were beautiful but alas not much scent, so won't be going in my garden. Interesting lecture on heritage roses and lots of roses for sale by a wholesale grower, really healthy well grown plants. I bought a Pierre de Ronsard, couldn't resist, bargain. Also joined up to the Rose Society, so very worthwhile.

i'll have to go next year sillky .. i'll put in a request for that weekend
