Re: Lots of Roses
All your roses are looking good Dan. I really like the look of Firestar. What can you tell me about it? Sutters Gold looks wonderful too. I think I grew it many years ago but recall it was intensely yellow with scarlet tinges. Is this the usual colour of Sutters Gold or is my memory playing tricks on me? I think I prefer your more muted version.

Re: Lots of Roses
hi silky, firestar is a new one for me . only had it for a short time , so far it is a prolific bloomer on the healthy side , great colour . the scent is different sometimes its strong and other times its medium , more stronger at night .
sutters gold is normally yellow but it can differ all depends on the weather , when its warmer its more yellow

Re: Lots of Roses
My Firestar cuttings have blooms which I think is pretty amazing. And I find Sutters Gold like Dan says.

Firestar aka Easy Does It has been at the top of my list for some time as a must acquisition for 2014. I only hope it isn't too orange-y.

Re: Lots of Roses
hi Maree, the fragrance on sutters is on the medium side , not very strong but nice to take a wiff on a warm day , unfortunately sutters doesn't last too long on the bush or as a cut flower inside

Re: Lots of Roses
maree i have COTE D AZUR and i must say for me it is the best yellow hybrid tea rose ticks all the boxes health, quick repeat, and fragrance to die for, color would have to be the most purest yellow of all and does not fade away highly recomended.

Re: Lots of Roses
I checked Cote D Azur on the Rankin Roses website and the colour is brilliant according to the photograph.
As an exhibitor I have the following questions.
Does it have classical hybrid tea exhibition form with a high centre? e.g. Moonstone
How many petals does it have?
Does it cluster? e.g. Baron E de Rothschild

Re: Lots of Roses
Thanks David
After looKing at HMF it is definitely not a high centred hybrid tea so it wouldn't be suitable for the exhibition class. If it has up to 28 petals and it clusters it may make the grade as a decorative bloom.
Of the yellow roses the most successful on the show bench in recent years have been St Patrick, Gold Medal and to a lesser extent Victoria Gold (Welsh).

Re: Lots of Roses
Thanks Jordan for those lovelies. I was just wandering in the garden this morning, thinking I should take some more pix, and here you are with your usual delicious assortment. Mmmm Monsieur Tillier always does it for me but I just don't have the room to plant it in my garden. I know yours is in a pot so maybe.... How big has yours grown? Would it be possible for you to post a photo of the whole plant to give me an idea of size and growth habit?
Your Parole looks fantastic! I ordered it bareroot but got a wrong 'un, then saw Parole at Werribee and was disappointed so went off it. But yours looks so good and now I'm thinking again. How do you find it?

Re: Lots of Roses
And what's your Young lycidas up to, Dan? I haven't bonded with mine yet. Can't complain about nice fat fairly rounded litle shrub, throws basals like a bandit, and the small mauvey flowers are very nicely scented. When they show up. So where are the flowers, I ask ya? I must have gotten a scant nosegay in two years.

Re: Lots of Roses
Hi Betsy , where is the flowers ?
well let me tell ya , it seems Young lycidas a bit tight on flower production .. I must admit though this year its little generous and has improved quite a bit especially after the Moo POO

Re: Lots of Roses
Where did my post go?? Lost in cyberspace...I'll try again.
Betsy, your Parole looks magnifique! Bright I don't mind, better any day than insipid. Trash a rose? Never. That's it, between you and Jordan, you've converted my fickle heart. Again!

Re: Lots of Roses
silky, as you can see by her colour, Parole is a party girl and she lurvs a drink or seven. Adequate water won't do it - she needs a snootful to turn on the charm. Maybe at Werribee, she wasn't getting enough bar service? When I'm watering the other roses, I pour her triple measures. When I don't, she can go very sullen.

Re: Lots of Roses
Ahh that explains a lot Betsy, thanks. Yes at Werribee Parole looked washed out and blowsy, the total opposite of your gorgeous duo. It will have a prime spot that retains moisture and is choc full of goodies.
