Pope John is the one I have as an avatar at the moment Smile I think I prefer "Jardins de Bagatelle" as a white rose, got stronger stems, better shape and still lovely big, fragrant blooms.

I am in sync with you, Rose-Anna. To me, JdB is a more elegant, aethereally alluring rose, and I prefer its fragrance 2-1 above PJPII. But His Holiness is a beautiful bush, one of the best I've seen for fully dressed top to bottom leafiness/

Funny, JdB seems to have fallen from fashion: even Treloars, which stocks just about everything, has dropped it from their catalogue.

Jordan, I'd conservatively rate JdB's scent as 8 out of 10. Like French designer perfume, sweet but not cloying, complex, wafting but not brash.

It's a really good rose, unfortunatly the Hibiscus Beetles have also taken a liking to it.

Jordan, PJPII is a very stunning rose with excellent reviews wherever I looked, and which certainly makes for a stunning avatar, Rose-Anna; but my next white on the list is Boule de Neige (Bourbon, 1867).
The Bourbons are said to do very well around the Brisbane area, and BdN especially so. The fragrant whites that grow in my garden currently are Clair Austin (DA) and Amaretto/Sebastian Kneipp/Fragrant Memories (HT); and I also have Iceberg, which is very nice, apart from having no fragrance at all.

Hail to white roses; you can never have enough of them: they look fantastic everywhere you put them, blending with and freshening up anything around. For this reason I’ve put some effort into identifying fragrant white roses on the market and PJPII certainly made the list. For less outrageously priced alternatives, I also noted:

Thanks, Rose-Anna and Betsy, for mentioning JdB; I’ve added that to my list quick smart.

Yes, great stuff, Jac, and thank you! I'm trialling Ice Girl right now, to see if she is worth having for scent and vase (for which she was bred).

Margaret Merrill - this one has me totally confused: some say "Great scent!", some say " What scent?". Will the real MM please stand up? What do you all say?

The three Diamond Jubilees that I've grown were a definite parchment/beige shade. Mine could never be construed as white, but they looked stylish as a cream foil to my JdBs.

I have noted your comments on Diamond Jubilee, Betsy, thanks, and would like to hear your verdict on Ice Girl, too.

Thanks for confirming MM has a great scent, Jordan.

Silky, I went back to get Margaret Merril after you recommended her earlier this year, but she was gone. With so many nice comments about her, I’ll make sure that won’t happen next year.

Many exhibitors and judges are tipping PJP11 to have a big year on the show bench come Spring as an exhibition bloom.

If His Holiness makes a splash in the show ring, then I reckon one could justifiably say that with its incredible no-spray health, mighty vigor, beautiful shapeliness, and really defined fragrance, this rose Has. It. All.
