i have had james veitch for three years , at first he struggled to get some growth and had a touch of BS to begin with . it has cleanned up very well and it is twice the size now , i am very impressed with this rose .. lovely blooms and beautiful foliage.. as far as the scent goes . WOW very fragrant . it almost smells like roseraie de l'hay

Your place must be looking like a rose paradise Jordan. How do you find the growth and health of Fisherman's Friend? I've had my eye on this one for a while. Is it gangly, overly thorny?

Fisherman's Friend is FIENDISHLY THORNY.
Can't comment on the growth - it's doing just as badly as everything else in that area of the garden...

hi silky,
let me warn you about FF, it is very thorny lol.. fragrance is on the medium side mainly in the morning it sends its fragrance well at least the one i have here , it has repeated several times for me , it needs a good feed now and then to perform well , on the disease side its been okay , had no dramas . the blooms are glorious , very dark and very fluffy
hope this helps silky

Thanks Jordan and Autumn, that's very helpful. One of my (many) pet aversions is ultra thorny roses. Even glorious flowers don't even up the scales. If I was on a country property with heaps of space, fine, but in suburbia plants should be well mannered and benign IMO. Sorry FF, although my attraction has evaporated, you are still a fine looking fellow.

Yeah Jordan, problem is finding THE PERFECT ONE!! Lol. Any suggestions? Beautiful large flowers that stay awhile, bushy, no octopus arms and of course drenching perfume.

Dunno Dan, I find The Squire reasonably thorny (not as bad as Fishermen's Friend).

Normal type thorns I accept as part of the rose, it's the ultra thorny ones I just can't abide in my garden. I have enough ripped clothing and scratches already without inviting in rapacious marauder. I've heard the squire is a bit sparse on foliage, would that be correct?
