Re: Wendy's Wishlist
At some stage all members will understand Wendy that the rose named 'Mermaid' is one of the best roses going . Everyone should have it in their garden

Re: Wendy's Wishlist
LOL I probably would only be able to fit her in way down the bottom of the garden.

Re: Wendy's Wishlist
Nice list Wendy.
There are a few there that I have here [Ebb Tide , Joyfulness , Molineux , Ophelia ] and a few that I had in my old garden [ Chapeau de Napoleon , Dainty Bess , Frau Dagma Hasstrup , Gloire de Dijon , Mermaid]
Of the whole lot of those bushes , Ebb Tide is the only millstone. I'm not saying that it won't be an absolute charmer in a garden where it gets a lot of pampering , it's just that it is sickly here.
And it's not like it's a B.S magnet like Augusta Louise , because it's not , it's just a miserably little squib grower.
A.L will shed her leaves with gay abandon with a niff of B.S but then she starts growing again. If I race out with the bug gun [doesn't happen often] she regrows even quicker .
But that is not Ebb Tide's problem , seemingly it is just a lazy grower.
And I think I could always find room here in the garden for Mme Caroline, Mme. Butterfly and Mrs D.C

Re: Wendy's Wishlist
Yeah, am having 2nd thoughts about 'Ebb Tide'. I really need plants that can survive non-fussing. Although I could just put it in the bed with the small-growing roses.

Re: Wendy's Wishlist
'Ebb Tide' here is pampered and is just over minature size despite being fed a rich mixture of fertiliser good enough to make most roses a house eater. Genetically it's a dud despite being featured on the front cover of a well known nursery brochure.
I bought mine to breed from and will even give that a miss.

Re: Wendy's Wishlist
I'm still new at growing roses but I can tell you about some that I have in QLD
Big Purple - Amazing I love this one, although in QLD more hot pink than purple
Ebb Tide - Small flowers and they die within a day, really slow grower, flowers smell nice though
Henri Matisse - AMAZING !! Gorgeous smelling flowers. Not a good cut flower but one of my favourites
Have you got Blackberry Nip? I like this more than Big Purple.
Thanks just my 2 cents worth

The word from the breeder of 'Ebb Tide' himself is that it is a poor grower on its own roots... which means its cuttings probably won't strike either and if they do they will be poor doers. It also has a PBR which means we can't exchange it. IMO, it's a dud every way you look atr it. Hang out for a much better one called 'Midnight Blue' which is sister seedling to 'Ebb Tide' without the 'I hate life' gene. I have 'Ebb Tide' and it might be better known as 'Shrinking Violet'.
From the rest of your list I have 'Dainty Bess', 'Fire & Ice', 'Pink Grootendorst', and Rosa setigera
. They are still a bit small to take cuttings from but you are welcome to them when they have some size (possibly by winter). Note that Punk Grootendorst will sucker at will on its own roots and Rosa setigera is huge and will layer with as much ease as multiflora and wichurana do.

Re: Wendy's Wishlist
I got an ebb tide as one of the first ones here in WA.....set it up in new soil , correct ph etc.......I couldn't get it to grow higher than 600mm. As a floribunda, the flowers didn't last.......but having said that....it won the champion floibunda section at the latest national rose show....

Re: Wendy's Wishlist
Thanks for the comments.
And I think I have just the place for "uninhibited growers" to play in (I figure that if R. rubiginosa can grow wild down there well it will be okay for the other species roses. .)

Re: Wendy's Wishlist
For me, in Sydney, Aimee Vibert produced ratty little dirty-white flower clusters. Big Purple is more hot pink than purple in Sydney, as well as Q. Fair bit of black spot as well. Ebb Tide, full blown, is rather charmless. I have heaps of Frau Dagmar in the Blue Mountains because descriptions seduced me into planting her as a hedge; a bit dull really.
Molyneux is an absolute winner. I didn't plant it for ages because I knew some people of that name whom I loathed. But it's a flowering machine in Sydney. Here is a pic taken this week which shows bud production. The first spring flush finished about three weeks ago, I think, and this is how far Molyneux has already geared up for the next one....

Pearl Drift is pleasant but average in the Mountains. A fair bit of black spot as summer wears on.

Re: Wendy's Wishlist
I have Mme Caroline Testout. It is branchy and thorny but responds well to a good prune and has the most amazing flowers, almost globes of tightly packed petals, in a lovely pink shade with a hint of almost blue. In my own mind, I call the shade 'ashes of roses' because I heard of it somewhere and liked it. I have no idea what the real ashes-of-roses looks like!
