New DA release at Treloars

I will be if they have any left when I can get to Bunnings in Bunbury next week .
They had some when I was there the other day and my eyes always light up when I see something new that I haven't got but as I was there with my dearly beloved .....
the money got spent in the tool shop.

We have finally had a little rain and I'm feeling garden inspired again with the drop in daytime temps .

Barbara this is what you get when you cross Charles Austin with Raubritter, very doubled and highly perfumed, one of the crosses I did last year.

Rosalie the plant is very healthy as well, at 10 months old it is about 3ft high.

Thanx Rosalie, I research 9 mths before I start breeding, its a lot of work but it pays off in the end. But I can tell you when i see the first flower of an offspring that looks like goodie, I stand there in awe and think I had some thing to do with its creation.

Good looking rose Warren, will it see daylight to the public or not.
Rosalie, has the B shop got this years new releases already and general roses ?.
As you have said before in your area multiflora grows well, can I assume Treloars would be multiflora or fortuniana.

When I was down at Treloars they had bundles of 200 (MULTIFLORA) they do use some Dr Huey , but not that much. Calusing is done in this 30ft x 20ft box of coarse river sand numbering in the tens of thousands.

I was taken around the complex 200 acres and it is a site to see, glad I went down there

Just to clarify... When I said "Treloars = Dr Phooey" above I meant the understock they use is Dr Huey... I love Treloars roses... they are the strongest I've bought anywhere.

Why is it that the only thing that I've had come up from roses bought from Treloars is Dr Phooey... over quite a few years?

simon I knew you were'nt having a go at treloars, when I went down most of there roses now are grafted on multiflora, the fellow I went down with was given a bundle of 100 multiflora root stock, when coming back home I thought I should have hinted for some as well, any way to late now.

These big commercial places are a site to see and the way the do things.

Have you got your own multiflora plant, Warren? If not I have a truck load of seed you can have to set yourself up some virus-free seedling rootstocks. I also have two very nice potted multiflora seedling from two seasons ago that you can have if you would like to get some quicker. They are in 30cm pots and are about two feet tall and wide at the moment. They are both thornless. I need to keep them cut back or else they'd be 6ft high and wide by now. They are surplus to my needs as I've already chosen a seedling from the same batch which is planted in the ground now to supply rootstocks should I need them. I don't need many... just enough to ensure I have a few rootstocks on hand should I need them. I threw away about 20 struck multflora cuttings this afternoon too... I would be going down the path of seedling raised multiflora instead of getting them from somewhere else to eliminate the risk of infecting your roses with RMV.

It's good to see them moving away from the Dr. There is too much virus entrenched in it now. I'm actually going to do a wichurana x multiflora cross next season to try for a new broad-application rootstock (though I still firmly believe the future of grafted roses is limited and own-root is the way of the future). There are other rootstock crosses that I think would be interesting too such as longicuspis var. sinowilsonii (LvS) x wichurana, LvS x multiflora, Indica Major x multflora, Indica Major x LvS, Indica Major x wichurana... it would be interesting to develop some tetraploid rootstocks too to see if that helps with tetraploid hybrids. I would also be REALLY interesting to breed a miniature multiflora rootstock for miniature hybrids to avoid pushing the minis so hard so they end up looking like grotesque big-limbed dwarves So many interesting things to explore!

I managed to get the last Skylark in the display today plus a Belle Story .
Two other pink pretties that I picked up a few weeks ago are Miss Alice and The Mayflower.

The also had a few nice plants of some of the oldies that I haven't seen for quite a while - L.D Braithwaite , Dove and The Prince that might need a home up the hill too.

I'm keen to hear how 'Skylark' performs. It looks rather different from the rest of the DA stable.

You probably have mentioned it before but have done any tea crosses.

Qld (the coastal and tropical areas) is not suitable for DAs. Thye suffer badly in the humidity and you have to prune them every other week or they grow tall and lanky.

We grow teas and noisettes sussesfully and some chinas and hydrid musks do ok but unfortunately no one is making any new ones and my skill at breeding (roses that is as I thnk my kids are ok) as not been shown up as brilliant. I am intending to keep trying but it would be interesting to know if anyone is using these to try to develop a "tropical" rose.

Have been thinking of this for a long while now as I use to live in Brissy back in the 70's and saw how roses suffered . Last year I did 4 Tea crosses, which the flowers I think will develope into something very nice. This year I should have seedlings from other chinese species crosses, and hopefully, I did my homework and they turn out ok.

This winter I am buying in 3 more chinese species roses and I have access to a multiple array of Teas, Noisettes and Chinas, so the next couple of years will be very interesting as they will be backcrossed with each other.

What is your greatest problem up there in the sunshine coast?

The main problem this year has been the rain but as I said with the DAs HTs etc it is blackspot and extreme growth. We don't spray and generally don't prune and our soil is very acidic (4-5) so we certianly don't have ideal rose growing conditions but our Teas and Noisettes seem to love it.

We have removed virtually all of our DAs. There is a Teasing Georgia (which seems to handle things better yet a cutting grown one that I did was not as good) and there is still a Graham Thomas whichfor some reason I have not removed because it gets me every time I walk past it. But that is about it.

Gary you have given me a goal, breeding Austin style roses which can tolerate the tropical conditions. I have a few roses I bred which will hopefully convert the Teas into an Austin style rose.

Alister Clark had an aim to develop an Australia style rose that could stand the conditions but unfortunately he lived in Victoria which is nearly perfect for most roses so he probably did not aim for a tropica; rose.

I'm sure a tea will be a good basis for it. Comtesse de Larbarthe would be a good place to start. It loves the conditions here as does Mme Lambard. Both seem to get planty of hips. I have managed to get some seeds to germinate but the seedlings were eaten by a mouse or something. I will try again

Warren, something extra to breed out of the DA's is canes dying. In July I have to cut out about 50% of the DA canes right at the graft.

Gary, I have success with Alister Clark roses, ' Argosy ' is my pick of the bush HT's and climbing 'Lorraine Lee ' best of the climbers.

Have been lucky to pick up a few very healthy breders, one is
' Carefree Beauty ' which is a dense growing shrub rose.
Hopefully some of these will give me a start to breed healthy roses.

I have noticed the roses bred for good performance in sub zero temperatures also perform well here in heat and humidity.

We have had the same problem with canes dying as well. But some (not all only a couple of them) of the teas do the same but it dis appear to me to be a DA thing.

Rose Edward does very well in here. Infact it is the national flower of Maldives. It sets hips. Haven't tried germinating them. I have a few crosses on my mind.
