mislabeled roses

Hi All,
Just wondering , is everyone else as irritated as me when you find a climbing rose thats grown beautifully in a season (7ft )is mislabeled and you have put it next to another of the same variety , specially when you are short of room. What should have been Mme Berard turns out to be Souv de Leonie Viennot The other annoyance is finding a rose constantly sold under the wrong name.

I had a "discussion" regarding the mis-identification of these two (actually E. Veyrat Hermoanos as Mme Berard is not available in Australia) at a "specialist" rose nursery here in Queensland. The owner of the nursery insisted that the rose growing on their house was Souv de Leonie Viennot and brought out a copy of Macaboy's Roses to prove it and even though the description of Souv de Leonie Viennot did not fit the rose the owner still did not believe me. The owner also said that the rose flowered all year round, Leonie does not whereas E. Veyrat Hermoanos does.

When the nursery people are like this you wonder just how many roses are incorrectly labelled about the place.

Some call it "poetic" licence Gary or just outright pigheadedness.

Thanks for that, looks a very good rose, haha yes they can be very piggish and not interested at all when you question 'do they have the right rose '. that is interesting re Mme Berard as it was definatly sold as such from the rose nursery in Victoria, just a pest I bought the real Mme Leonie and by chance planted it next to it, so up it came yesterday and into a new spot, I must say they are incredibly strong growers and v drought hardy over last summer. At least that leaves a bare spot for a new rose , I am afraid I have a an addiction to collecting new 'old roses'.

While we are on the subject of mislabeled roses, perhaps someone would know where I might be able to buy the real Macartney, as in rosa bracteata macartney.   I have been looking for it for 30 years and every plant I have seen even at rose nurseries in Wa, and private gardens is actually the Cherokee rose - rosa laevigata, when I questioned one large nursery a couple of weeks ago they just stared and then stated they had no idea of the botanical name of the rose they were selling.  I recently put a pic on a WA garden page where everyone called it the Mccartney rose, I think this is because no nurseries are naming it correctly, either that or I am completely wrong.  This pic is of rosa laevigata I believe[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

That is definately Laevigata, can you tell me the nurseries you have tried Lucia, that will cut some of my leg work out ?

Great glad you said that :)Dawsons, Roworths in Perth for one just couple weeks ago, not only not bracteata mcartney but a pink single and over the years others most in WA, some nurseries since disappeared. The thing is I have gotten a bit wary of even ordering one from the east in case its another laevigata. Though how they mix them up beats me as the leaves and growth are only superficially alike from the description and pics.

Just remember that import of roses from another state will cost you extra....my last import rose cost me $200

Thats v costly, hmm would need to be a special one In the past its only cost aprox $30 extra for quarantine , I think from Mistydowns and Ross roses last year. I would like buy them here , but so many are not available and others like the Macartney are mislabeled. To be fair to the nurseries the old roses seem to have gone right out of favour compared to 20 years ago

John, can you expand on the costings please.

After a recent purchase of Governor Marie Bashir from Swanes it becomes apparent just how expensive it is to purchase a rose from the Eastern States and have it transported to Western Australia.
Costings:- Swanes Nursey...$21.95 for rose.....$97.70 for quarantine certificate NSW......freight $20.....GST $12.88.....$61 for quarantine inspection WA...total cost $202.65...

Thats rediculous, don't Swane's have an agent there.
