I have had a couple of years off the rose garden, it got out of hand when I had foot surgery early last year and I didn't get around to weeding it when I could walk properly again. Here is what it was like a couple of weeks ago:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

I am currently off work indefinitely on stress leave and about to have the other foot done but having seen a bloom a month ago and the roses in the hardware store I have decided to have another go. Surprisingly enough there were 4 left. The two to the R of the picture I think are Mr Lincoln and Camp David but will have to wait for another bloom to tell. Then there is a little one to the front of the tree to the L of the garden in front of the log. Then a climber going up a tree (now it is, it had tried a bit of creeping through the grass).

Don't shoot me but I have a few hardware store roses to start off with in the tub in the foreground to plant soon.

I will try to remember to get back on here to check the posts but these days I mostly frequent jewellery making forums as that is where my hobby interest has taken me.

Cheers
Judy

Thank Dannyboy, I have 75 acres of secondary growth bush 20 km north of Mareeba in FNQ. Gets wet and soggy during the wet, dry and hard for the rest of the year. All on clay. Bore water to water the yard. To me every tree is precious and I hate cutting any out. Will have to do a few soon as I am going to build a cottage.

Hello and welcome back Judy. How things have changed. Roses to jewellery.
There are but a few that would know Judy(aka Scubamid) from a past life. She has had ups and downs like all of us. Roses go back a long way with her.
A couple of memories from the past, getting the car bogged, snakes, looking after her dogs/puppies, ticks from memory, building/renovating home, many other things and Judy took all in her stride and travelled a good distance to work.
From me Judy, pop in when you can and more to the point look after those feet of yours.
Best Wishes David.

Thanks David.
I still have two dogs, the Red Kelpie bitch Ameena and her daughter Dusty. Still live in the shed in the bush but plan to turn a couple of shipping containers into a cottage.
I planted out 8 roses since that second photo today.
Mr Lincoln, Augusta Louise, Jayne Austin, Moulin Rouge, Just joey, Helmut Schmidt, Blue Moon and um, um, too dark and cold to go out and have a look. These choices were governed by the availability in the local shops.
Cheers

Best of luck with your roses Judy .
I have several of the ones you have mentioned and enjoy them.
Augusta Louise is one of the few roses in my garden here that I single out for special attention.
She is a veritable B.S magnet so I have her planted right next to the front path and I have one of those little spray bottles with some fungicide mixed up on the shelf on the verandah just for her because she is 100% worth it. Her big frilly crinoline like flowers are just stunning. There's about 400 roses here but you could count on one hand the number that get the very special V.I.P treatment .

Helmet Schmidt is very near the top of my Top 10 Yellows. Thumbsup

cheers. Rosalie

Thanks Rosalie.
I have just lookedup Augusta Luise on HMF and she sounds great. I have had Helmut Schmidt before and loved him. Same with Just Joey and Blue Moon.

I wasn't happy with Blue Moon as a rose. It did not live up to the expectations that people put on it. Having said that, it might be the area I live in which makes it that way.....

Neptune, I have not found Blue Moon to be vigorous here.
I grow Helmut Schmidt Holtermans Gold and numerous other yellows and prefer HG.

We grow HGold and it holds its own at the present. Runs middle of the line for competition, and it a good bloomer.....

woodchip is nice and colorful, but in order for it to break down, it pulls the nitrogen from the soil to break down the wood and starves the bush of needed nitrogen......IMHO it would be better to use lupin hay, lucerne/alfalfa hay, or sugar cane mulch. They don't need nitrogen from the soil to break down and they actually give back to the soil......plus the added bonus, they are cheap or free if you know a nice farmer

Probably a good idea Neptune but I need to keep the weeds from coming up. I will have to pee in there a few times and give them the nitrogen they need.
The only one of the above available is sugar cane trash and it breaks down in double quick time. Also don't know a farmer.
