Re: David Austin Roses
Sure, curved or upright stems are a trait and that will not change in different environments, but skinny versus strong canes would be influenced by it.
Jude the Obscure has curved stems and large bloom; in the ground she held her blooms well, but in the pot they hang upside down.
If a plant keeps producing abundant roots in pots, it must want something its not getting – that’s not part of normal growth. Maybe all the energy is going into producing all these abundant roots instead of building strong stems?
Do standards grow? I never had one and thought they stayed the same height.

Re: David Austin Roses
I meant to say canes, not stems – the canes will be either strong or spindly.
I’ve been shifting a couple of roses around yesterday, and JtO is going into the ground today. We’ll soon see if that made a difference. No long deep center roots had developed on the two HTs I moved yet, and I’m glad I did this early rather than later.
If JtO doesn’t grow stronger canes that hold her flowers upright in the ground, I don’t know what accounts for the difference in my two Judes. Would you think the root-stock could influence something like this, David?

Re: David Austin Roses
Yes on one hand. The other concideration might be and I say might be if the two plants were budded from different plants, thinking oin the run as I am off to work, thinking at work, will add more tonight.

Re: David Austin Roses
Thanks David, and the budding Q has just put a very different light on the whole situation:
LOOK AT THAT
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
This is what I found on the other side when turning the pot around today to move JtO into the ground.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
WHAT THE … !?!?
There are two different grafts on that plant; one is JtO and the other a complete mystery. Pretty, with a very strong Jasmin fragrance, but certainly not JtO.

Re: David Austin Roses
I shall take a photo when the sun comes up.
I had noticed some of the leaves were a lot darker early on, and though it was sunburn already, but then the leaves stayed healthy and I though nothing further of it. When the different flower opened today, it suddenly made sense and I traced it back to the union. There is a whole cane with different leaves and flower buds and another with Jude’s leaves and flowers.

Proper (skinny) Jude cane on R
Mystery (fat) cane on L
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Graft:
Skinny Jude cane in front
Fat mystery cane in back
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Jude (no longer sulking) with lighter rounder leaves on L, cluster of mystery buds with darker, narrower leaves on R.
Top-down to feature leave differences
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
They’ll stay in the pot for now, until I sort out what to do; may have to get another Jude.

I’m sure I’ve seen this yellow rose somewhere before; it smells very much like Pat Austin and I’m thinking it might be one. Comtes de Champagne?

Re: David Austin Roses
Jackie looking at the second shot, by my eyes I think it is all out of the one bud union, looking on HMF quickly they have a relationship with Abraham Derby, that is JtO and Pat A

Re: David Austin Roses
Thanks for checking, David; this is my PA:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
To me, it only smells like PA.
The mystery-rose starts of a little orange, but is definitely yellow.

Re: David Austin Roses
Jackie, the union is where we have to start, I think it is one, not 2 as previously thought. We need it to shoot a basal from the union. I notice there is one that has been cut off, hopefully it will another.
If it is one union it "might", just "might" be "sporting" from the bud union, I have never seen it before, but it could happen I guess. When Warren comes back on lets eee what he thinks.
If it is all from the one bud union, we could send the photo over to David Austin and ask for help with it, they have done in the past.

Oh, that sounds great, thank you so much! In the meantime, I’ll try to get a better photo of the bud union, seeing there is still some uncertainty surrounding it.

Re: David Austin Roses
I was just thinking, maybe one rose was an earlier graft that looked like it hadn’t taken and the root stock was recycled?

Re: David Austin Roses
What an incredible place; is it yours?
There is a little yellow rose, which bears a striking similarity to my mystery rose.
I just rushed out to have another look and mine is very pale yellow today in the midday sun. I could take a couple more photos to show you, but they wouldn’t be any good until the sun sets a bit.

Re: David Austin Roses
No sorry Jackie, that is David Austin's nursery, which we were lucky enough to visit whilst over there for a family wedding 5 years ago. Mr Austin is a fantastic man to speak with and it was he that let us into all the glasshouses.

Can you see how that little yellow right on the first page looks very similar?

Jackie the one you are reffering to from memory had name on it which was "Rebecka". Again from memory it is/was going to be one of his cut flower range. I am not sure but I think we will never see them out here, wish we could as the one's saw all had fragrance

Looks like we just saw one here; whatever it is, it’s very pretty and fragrant.
I shall call her Rebecca, my best friend’s name, until I find a better match.
