David Austin Roses

After looking at this for a while I have started this thread about them. Not all members like them, we are all induviduals here. Here we can discuss all the pros and cons of his(David Austin) roses whatever they maybe.
This will be made a "sticky" so it does not disappear to quickly.

I think you tried the wrong one's

Roseman , i have had Jubilee Celebration , loved it , good rose . Wiliam Shakepeare , terrible , BS prone , leggy , stingy flowerer. Mayflower , no perfume , didn't like it . Mary Rose , nice flowers , no perfume to speak of , BS and mildew prone and drops all its leaves at the first sign of BS . I had four standards of Mary Rose which i pulled out , a real horror that rose , leaves everywhere. I researched all these roses , these problems wern't mentioned ... Jubilee Celebration gets my vote .. 8/10 others 0/10

tried seven different ones....they didn't like the conditions as well as the high heat.....as sooon as it got real hot,..they went into dormant mode....as Gary said...made for tassie and england

I di confess we still have one Grahmam Thomas and one Teasing Georgia simply because I like the yellow flowers. The bushes are generally a real mess.
Once the yellow teas and Noisettes get to be a decent size the DAs will probably head to the scrapheap.

okay as you guys know i have few of david austin roses .. so far leander is great and had no problems with falstaff ..

must say tho graham thomas is disspointing to me .. gets BS and the no perfume whatsoever .. another one that i recommend is sharifa asma,heritage ..

well again every state is different .. and ofcourse that only my opinion others will disagree

Jordan, did you know 'Leander' can get biggish. The other thing to note is it 'Leander' has it own group within David Austins, many are large to climbers.

yes david , she is in a huge pot here .. plenty of room for her to spread

What an excellent idea, David, I love the DAs and have not had any problems with them. I will post all my 15 of them here on this link as they start to bloom.

Jordan, that's quite a collection you have! Are they all in pots or do you have some in the ground? Do you find them hardy and healthy here in Melbourne? I know that many of them have quite long canes, how do you manage all that growth with so many? I'm sorry if my questions seem basic, but just I can't imagine so many roses in suburbia. You must be very keen and have a real passion for DA's.

hi silky, mine are all in pots .. since last year i did prune them hard .. they are quite happy in their big pots and to be honest have spoken to few people that have growing some varieities of david austins .. and some perform so much better in pots .. mine are in pots till i eventualy buy my own place .. yes i do have lots of roses and it is lot of work .. but very happy to do that extra work and to be rewarded with such beautiful blooms and great roses .

i do have a big passion for roses i like the heritage roses .. and i guess some of the david austin roses remind me a bit of the old bourbons and albas and the damasks . guess they are more of a repeat .. so far i havent had a problem with any of the david austin roses as far as major blackspot or any other diseases.. apart from getting one from a nursery that died on arrival .. and one that i bought from bunnings that didnt last long it died after 2 weeks .. but the rest are doing very well

I’ve come across many lists in many different places when googling info on a particular rose, and there never is any more info other than a name amongst a sea of others. So I know how meaningless these lists are to anyone except their owners. If I blurb them all out together, they loose their uniqueness and it took me much longer to select them than it could take anyone to fly over in passing. For this reason I thought it might be more exciting to release them one by one as they bloom and take the time to record my first impressions.

That’s what I’m hoping others will do with their roses, because hearing how a rose is doing here in Aus would be really useful to me, and pictures always add a lot. Instead of 50 different comments on 50 different roses in one go that I have to sort through.

What a top 5-star idea, Jac. I also prefer to read about individual roses in focussed context - why it was selected in the first place, how it performs,where it fits into the owner's grand design. This last is not limited to place in a garden, but , for potted roses, how a particular rose fills the gaps or expands on a theme.

i agree betsy .. hopefuly some of us who like the david austin roses can see how they perform in diferent states ..

I had to David for I become quite worked up when I hear that name.
I still have Heritage left out of 25 odd that fell by the wayside. Now I have said it, won't bring up the subject again.

I know you will be disappointed having lost your sparring partner.
