Anyone have rose problems

I thought if any one has any rose problems , I may be able to help out in fixing it.

Hi Nep, are in right in the Perth sandhills, older brother lives up in Gero with similar soil types, its not easy.

your right Warren...not easy growing in beach sand....

Nothing that good consistent rose growing conditions would not fix

Is it possible to stop roses from dying back with all this rain

It's frustrating to go and and see the canes turning black.

My other question is does canker and sunburn look similar?

Happy Roses, I have lost a lot of canes, but not too fussed as I hope the Autumn will bring lots of new growth, yes I am optimistic

I have had 3 Mutabilis and a Fantin Latour die this growing season in the same manner: healthy plants one week and the dead the next. I've taken dead branches to local nurseries and they can't tell me anything except suggest root rot. Tee leaves don't drop, it's not die back. As they have all died in the one area of my garden, I suspect some sort of soil borne virus, but have no idea.

Anny suggestions?

If all the problems started since the rain I would say drainage problem within your soil. If a drainage problem, even though there is water all around the plants leaves will start to droop( much like wilting from lack of water) which is caused from the fine to med size roots rotting away.

What you can do is raise the beds to bring the roots system above the problem or put in some Agi pipe surrounded by gravel to take the excessive water away.


With canes turning black it seems very likely to be a fungus problem. Some rose cultivars have a reputation of having die back for no apparent reason ( probably goes back to the species rose it was bred from). If the temperature is well below 30 C you could spray with Mancozeb and white oil (1/4 of the recomended rate for whiteoil) as it makes the mancozeb stick better.

A very good practise in Winter is to thoughly spray your roses straight after pruning with Lime Sulphur. By doing it this way and not the next day allows the Lime Sulphur to penetrate into the wound due to pruning and adding a shield for fungus spores, sort of like cutting yourself and wiping it over with Detol or Betadine.

Sunburn on rose canes normally occurrs when the foliage has a low density to it which allows strong sunlight to penetrate onto the canes. Did you have some BS which defoliated the rose slightly? Sunburn will almost often occur on the west side of the cane effected, if it isn't then I would say its canker. I had friends who had severe sunburn on their standard Icebergs, I told them to move the supporting stake around to the west side of the trunk and the stake absorbed all the heat and the problem was solved.

Brian over what period of time did you notice any symptoms to death. What part of OZ are you in? It could be a drainage problem as said in the above response to Happy Roses or something nastier. You havent bought in any new plants over the last couple of months? Or topped up the beds or top dressed lawns ect with topsoil from outside you garden. There is a soil borne water mould called Phytophthora cinnamomi, real nasty critter. Over in WA you had to pressure wash you car tyres before entering some National Parks. Most Phytophthora deaths are in the end of summer as the plant has been stressed the most during this period. There is no treatment only preventive measures such as bringing in foreign soils or things which have come in contact with theses soils

In all the rain we have had (and we have had plenty in last couple of years) we have not lost any roses to the wet. Some have been more or less lived in water for a couple of weeks. We have lost plenty of other plants but not roses.

Ours are all older varities and they may have something to do with it but generally we find that they do not mind the wet.

Thanks for getting back. I'm in Canberra. I haven't imported any soil. The bemusing thing is that the roses, which have died are planted in one area. One died last summer, the other three this growing season. There was long before my time a large cyprus that was cut down at ground level. AS Thomas discusses Armillaria mellea as a cause of sudden death.

Brian I still reckon it may be waterlogging or phytophthora,.Armillaria mellea is not in Australia but there is a native species Armillaria luteobubalina which causes the same damage.

Thanks Ozroz I will try the Mancozeb and white oil treatment. I have used Lime Sulphur in winter and I think this problem started before the rain, not sure as it's been raining on and off for so long. But I wonder as it went to about three or four of the roses, one of them being new. Is it possible the person at the nursery using the same cutters to trim bits of the roses as she sold them, could have started it? Being a fungal problem. Every time she sold me a rose she would trim some off. But yes I think the roses could be raised higher, just not sure how to do it. I have already moved them once before and I'm worried they might not recover well if I move them again

OzRoz, or anyone else, do you have any other suggestions for something to use instead of Lime Sulphur? I am extremely alergic to sulphur and can not use it at all.

Most of the fungicides available to the public have sulphur in them (Zineb,Mancozeb, Captan) as mentioned you could try the Copper oxychloride

Hey Warren, Happy to trade, my biggest rose problem is that my roses were never taught to swim! Perhaps BEFORE we flood next, some kind rose-talker could come and teach em? I guess fungus probs will be following shortly

P.S Could we borrow some floaties for the house too????
