Laevigata springs into action! Empty Laevigata springs into action!

Laevigata, jasmine, wisteria. Spring has sprung in my garden. Laevigata is one of my favourite old roses. However it's a monster, and I'll have to get help to reduce it by half. But it has bought years of delight, and hopefully will for many more years to come.

How beautiful, Dave !
I have 2 baby ownroots that I grew from cuttings Simon kindly sent me, something got there shiny leaves but they are still growing. I hope they grow into a copy of your beautiful R. Lavigata. I wonder if it will be knocked by our frosts ?
Thankyou for posting this surperb photo ! How does it smell ?

Be carefull with the own roots Karen... it suckers madly. In the U.S., where the cherokee rose has become naturalised (aka invasive), they've actually found that it is not reproducing sexually (by seed). Instead it has spread by suckering. People realised how useful it was as a living, inpenetrable, fence and they woul dwalk their property boundaries sticking pieces of laevigata in as they went and before too long they'd have a thicket that even bears wouldn't brave! I suckered and filled in and then began to 'walk'. So... put laevigata somewhere its suckers won't become a problem or be prepared to mow the suckers down as they stick their heads up. This is why this species is generally sold as a grafted plant. I sent you laevigata and 'Anemone'. Did they both strike? I'm sending Dave some Anemone too. Anemone is much more civilised and well bahved in the garden. Both 'Anemone' and laevigata handled the frosts here this year.

I am not worried if my roses sucker, will help keep the roos out. As you said, I will mow where I don't want it in the grass.
No, the Anemone didn't make it even though I thought it was going to. I have a grafted one planted now beside your R. Lavigata cuttings.

You're so right, Simon. Thankfully this one is grafted! There is one up the road where the guy keeps it to about 1 metre high. Not many flowers though. Karen if you're mowing near it, remember the razor wire prickles!! I can't detect any perfume.

Thanks all for your kind comments. It is looking even more magnificent now with the warmer weather.
