Rose seeds

Hey guys,

My neighbour gave me a bunch of rose hips he got. Some were orange and some still green. I've pulled all of the seeds out of the orange ones, just wondering what the next step is? Will the green ones ripen off the bush or should i just cut it open and try those seeds as well?

I'd try all of them as some hips don't turn red or orange. I'm only new at this but they need some cold treatment in the fridge before planting. I clean mine and wrap them in some damp kitchen paper and put them in a zip lock bag and put them in the fridge for a couple of months. Check on them after a month to see if they are germinating in the fridge. If not put the back in the fridge. I don't normally leave mine for more than a couple of months. After their cold treatment you can plant them out.

Thanks for your reply Louise! Yeah thats what I decided to do! I have put them on some moist cotton balls in small containers in the fridge!

Jordan Go directly to your fridge and remove them from the cotton balls, they will rot. Asa louise has said place them on some damp/moistened paper towel, not wet. I place mine on a single piece, I do not cover mine in the paper, place in zip loc bags with date and name of rose if known on bag. The reason I don't cover mine is I can see them if some germinate and remove without disturbing the other seeds, some will germinate, most won't. The time to takle them ot varies on the type of rose that they came off, Species roses take longer. If you get get some germination, place them in small pots, say 75mL tall. A good potting mix, something that will stay mist not wet will be your next step.

Jordan, seeds can rot if to wet in a container/bag, that is why I mentioned the paper towel. I collect some more info on statification in the next day oir so and post here.

Yes that will be ok, what sort of container Jordan, does it have a lid ?

Yeah it does have a lid David. Its a smaller version of those clear chinese takeway containers.

How long do i keep them in the fridge for? Until they start to germinate?

That is the million dollar question Jordan. As it is Hybrid Tea rose "we think" it could germinate within a month, maybe three months. It is normal to leave them in there over Winter. Whatever happens, take them out just prior to Spring and so them so they can aclimatise and shoot in the cool. Have you got anywhere that is warm if some do germinate and pot them up, as young plants they won't like Winter outside.
