Wish Lists Empty Wishlist ... Teas, Hybrid Musks, Noisettes & Bourbons

Post by rosebud 11th November 2013, 20:25

Ahh!! My dream wishlist!? I'm currently trialing roses that cope with Sunshine Coast hinterland conditions. We get severe frosts from time to time during winter and precious little rain during Spring, with torrential rain in mid Summer through to Autumn. So far, I've identified that Tea roses, Hybrid Musks, Noisettes and Bourbons seem to cope reasonably well here. Probably need to consider some Chinas as well.
So here goes...
Teas -
Dr Grill, Amelia Anderson, Homere, Etoile de Lyon, Marie van Houtte, Henrietta, Wood Street Buff-Yellow (from Tea Ladies' book).

Hybrid Musks -
Ballarina, Autumn Delight, Lavender Lassie, Thisbe, Pink Prosperity

Noisettes -
Any yellow/apricots (have Reve de 'Or)

Bourbons -
Boule de Neige, Victor Emmanuel, Mme Ernest Calvat

Happy to reciprocate from my own stock.

Hi Doug, Love's Gift, very nice rose, Sharon Louise, has interesting parents. These both are for the show bench I assume.

You are correct David. An interesting point about Sharon Louise is Marguerite Parkes still has the original bush she bred in the sixties.

If I was to want to make a bush of it I would go to the source, close as to the original is best.

Oh to have a bigger area to indulge my rosy fantasy. I would dearly love to have a Monsieur Tillier but lack the space. Have always wanted one and remember Jaci's euphoric descriptions of hers, which have stayed with me ever since. I miss her descriptions.

I saw the rose Fresh Cream a couple of years back in WA and remarked at the time,"What a magnificent specimen of a hybrid tea rose."

I have grown Monsieur Tillier for many years, it was about my first old rose because Trevor Nottle spoke so highly of it in his book on growing old roses. I loved it but found I couldn't let it get too big, so cut it back fairly hard each year. A couple of times I let it grow big and found the whole bush split down the middle, or branches off due to the weight of the flowers during spring storms - heart breaking. It's definitely worth squeezing in.

Oooh Roseman, never thought of a standard or weeper! Does it come in those forms? Never grown a standard or a weeper in my life, I think I'd be a bit scared I couldn't look after it in the longer term Wouldn't know what to do to have a happy plant. I'll definitely think about it though.
How much room would I need?

Oh, and my current wish list is Susan Irvine's book, The Garden at Forest Hall, so I can dream about all the roses I'd like to have. Not even my library stocks this one. But I will find a copy to add to my own library... just a matter of time!

Why don't you ask your library to get it in as an inter-library loan - I know our library here does that, it costs about $4 and can take a couple of weeks, but is a great way to get hold of a book you really want.
Forest Hall is a lovely book, if you lived closer I'd lend you mine!

Thanks Debbie G. I'm impatient I guess. Kind of hoping I'll come across the book so I can keep it, but you're right. Must get onto the library, then.
