Charlotte

This is a shot of a David Austin rose named 'Charlotte'. The shot is not all that good, but if you look closely you will see two or maybe three long canes. It is the rose in the foreground. It is early days but it "might" have sported to a climber, there are no recordings that I know of, I have check with DAR staff and they are unaware of any, they asked me to keep them posted with the progress of it. There is a bud starting to form on one of the canes, hopefully it will shoot before the cold sets in. These canes will not be pruned. The daggy yellow ones will be removed today. This is to see if any other shoots do the same as the rest.

I think a lot of DAs would climb given the chance. We had a Graham Thomas that consistently sent up 3-4m stems. We had another one the name of which I cannot remember did the same thing.

Both are long gone as the blackspot was too much for our liking.

Thanks Gary, yes after talking to Richard at DAR over the years, he has confirmed that a lot of DA's will want to be low to mid climbers in our climate due to the 'Leander' group/influence. I will just keep an eye on it.

No you mention it I think Leander was the other rose. Love the way HMF describes it as a shrub. A 14 foot x 6 foot shrub..

HMF would have taken that from the measurements given by DAR or English growers of it I think Gary.

My Munstead Wood has a couple of octopus arms like that too David. I would snip them off but they are full of flowers when nothing else is. So I leave them.
