Henri such a scrumptious-looking rose. I've been tempted by him so many times but haven't been able to detect any fragrance so gave it a miss. Yet Delbards says "Marvellous rich perfume with notes of rose and raspberry." Blowed if I can get excited over this claim though.

Rose porn.

I tell you silky, we should have a name-and-shame list for swing tag claims, with leeway for different noses. Not the current name and shame thread, but one devoted to swing tag claims vs reality.

Note to roseman: I think there should be a pinned thread for Members' Best, if there isn't one already. I've acquired one excellent rose based solely on recommendations here , and i would have stayed clear of a few if I had more guidance.

Yep I totally agree betsy. I have no issue with others detecting fragrance where I can't, but I get really fed up with ridiculous claims, written probably by advertising copywriters with $$$ their only concern. They should be held to account for false/misleading advertising.

Yep Rose porn Tantrum

Well now isn't this a strange one , my Henri Matisse does have a fragrance , i swear it , not overpowering , probably a 6/10 , but its there , my Blackberry Nip although it has only had two blooms, i can only detect a faint scent , it really is mystifying , i am so hoping it gets better cause the colour is great . Henri a small bush , a bit like Chartreusse ..

Blackberry Nip is on my elimination list. I am not prepared to wait three years for this rose to show off its stuff. Have better roses that need my attention, and need to be re-ordered.

if you think I am unduly quixotic, or impatient, all my best roses showed more-ish fragrant blooms and growth in their earliest days. Discount Young Lycidas - cute as abug's ear but I wouldn't recommend - but the rest perform, and I woudl recommend without hesitation

Again, I grow for the vase, with just a few exceptions

Betsy again , here we share similar thoughts , i have a high kill rate with roses , i admit it , my family think i'm nuts , my available space is prime real estate so if the roses don't perform , out they go , always looking for that rose that is special , and to have a change too ....

Maree, I am with you 100 per cent. The losers get culled, The winners stay. No time or interest in roses that don't grab me in some way from the first season

I will join both of you girls ......if it don't perform for me, then it doesn't get a foothold in my prime real estate....I now trial them first in 100ltr pots to give the roots to move, before making room in the garden. That way they are under automatic watering and I can control the fertilizing factor.......

Your culls can all come to me. Or Roseman (if Carole lets him have more. Razz ).

In my area the roses often take 3 years to mature. So I can deal with the wait. *g*

PS. They're all precioussssss. Except maybe Double Delight. It's got ONE LAST CHANCE.

AutumnDamask , i'm not the most gentle person when i'm digging out roses , they just get pulled out , and Double Delight , the colour just didn't sit with me ....

Listening to you guys, it strikes me I must be a bit strange, because I can't bring myself to cull any of my roses. Plus I'm too lazy to dig up and then bring in new soil etc etc. It's not the rose's fault that it doesn't suit. See, a bit strange! LOL
That's why I plan carefully and get so annoyed by unrealistic claims and rose porn. One of the reasons why this site is so great because you can get fair dinkum info.

maree ...you should be able to tell within one year on how it is growing, especially if you plant them during winter to allow the roots to set......then the next autumn should give you an idea on the growth.....then you have another year to look at how its future looks.....now a 100lt pot , looks like the size of half a 44 gallon drum

@ silkyfizz.......i dig them up if they don't perform for me on the bench because I don't have space for extras......

Seems normal to me! HENRI MATISSE- CHARLOTTE- PEGASUS- HERITAGE- BRILLIANT PINK ICEBERG 3318427985

ETA: Plus, I've learnt (for here) that when a rose doesn't do well early on it's usually my fault in terms of soil quality etc. I have pulled the odd sickly rose up and potted them. Got one doing very well at the moment that I did that for and I'll find a new place for it next winter.
