Hybrid Musk

Can someone tell me what does Hybrid musk mean, I was looking at a Buff Beauty and it's described as a Hybrid Musk.

Hybrid musk roses tend to form good-sized shrubs, four to five feet tall and four feet wide. Some grow large enough to use as short climbers. Their growth habit has been described as ''relaxed,'' meaning that the canes go where they please, avoiding the stiff, upright stance characteristic of the hybrid teas. Most hybrid musks produce clusters of strongly scented pink, yellow or apricot flowers, with a stupendous first flush in May or early June, and less abundant spurts of bloom thereafter until frost. I have found that hybrid musks are not impervious to black spot and powdery mildew, but recover strongly from them....

Thanks John, yes it does help, from what is described I think I'll give Buff beauty a miss and try and find another rose that has similar blooms and is a vigorous scented grower. Not asking much hey...

Thanks for that David, makes interesting reading. From what I can see, HM's only start flowering on second year wood. I do like Buff Beauty and wanted to have it in a large pot, of course due to lack of space, BUT, I seemed to be stumbling over it, am I right to keep away from HM's. What do you think.

No Paul, because they only flower on two year old wood means nothing, once it,Buff Beauty is established you will love it and maybe other HM's

Hmmm, well, I guess it wouldn't hurt to give it a go.

Give it a go. If you don't like it then rehome it. Am pretty sure I keep stumbling over one in the Benalla Gardens and it is lovely!

BB is very nice, and there are a few specimens flowing right now at Melvilles Rose Nursery if you want to see it.

If you want a smaller rose with similar colouring, there's an antique tea rose called Lady Hillingdon which stays a fair bit smaller, has nice big fragrant blooms, and repeats reliably all through your season. Also blooming and available at Melvilles

Just a small Off Topic here......Melville Roses is shutting down at the end of the year and is getting turned into a resort.......they will sell some roses , but they are being sourced from elsewhere....

I posted some months ago that Melvilles was on the way, I wonder if one could get a bargain when the time comes? Sounds like other nurseries might get in first. Now I heard on the grapevine that Swiss Roses maybe selling up as well. Not sure.

Thinksy I will take a trip up to Melvilles and have a look at BB, and have a look see on HMF at the lady H.

John Melvilles shutting down is just another sign of the general decline of the rose industry.

Paul, there's a lovely specimen of Lady H at Melvilles too, so if you do make the trip out there you can see her in person. She is planted in the driveway/car park of the nursery section, there's a long row there of teas and China's. And BB is grown as a large self-supporting tree rose on the right side of the driveway up to the cafe area, before you pass the lake.

Do check out the giant mountain that is Lamarque up near the cafe if you go!
