Slightly OT.....
Hi folks, this is a teensy bit OT, but I just purchased the Tea Ladies book on Tea Roses (Tea Roses: Old Roses for Warm Gardens) from the Book Depository website (should have it within the week! Yay!), and once the purchase was complete the website offered 'some other books that I might be interested in', and I couldn't resist clicking on this one:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Please note, it is NOT actually about roses, but it looks fascinating, none the less. Will probably buy it one day! Haha.
And on the Tea Rose book - I don't know if my garden is really considered 'warm', and I don't know how well teas will do here, but I couldn't resist. Anyway, we have to support these Aussie rose ladies.

Zoe, apart from the alps, I think we are all in a " warm" climate. You will love this book and find it hard sto put down.

Re: Slightly OT.....
Ooooooooooh thanks David! You have made me so excited!! I freakin' love teas and noisettes, more and more every day (even though I should NOT be looking at more roses! I am a bad person).
Goodbye lawn! Hello Mme Jules Gravereaux, Duchesse de Brabant, and a warm welcome to Mrs Dudley Cross! Oh, do come in Juane Desprez! Mme de Watteville, take a seat over there with Rosette Delizy and Mme Lombard! General Schablikine, have you met Octavius Weld? I'm sure you'll get along famously....
Although Neptune seems to think I live in The Alps, hopefully I'll be able to host this garden party of epic proportions.

I am going to have to get another copy of the book soon as I have read it so much I have worn the print away.

Re: Slightly OT.....
I love the "Tea Ladies" book too! And, yes, I think we probably do all live in a warm climate compared to England.
I've just read "Chasing the Rose", by Andrea di Robilant, (also from Book Depository)- and I LOVED it! It's packed full of stories about the Empress Josephine and her garden, and amazing little stories about rose history and people roses are named for; all woven into the story of the author trying to identify a rose from his old family home.
I couldn't put it down!

Re: Slightly OT.....
(Neptune, I actually have a pink terry-towel dressing gown not unlike the one in the picture, which I wear on my days off until about 11am when I get around to starting the day.... Yep, I'm all about fashion, me. Haha. It's actually a fairly accurate depiction of me this morning!)
Anyway Deb, that book sounds great! Is it illustrated? If not, I'll get it on the Kindle. If it is, Book Depository again...

Re: Slightly OT.....
I think you would enjoy the book Zoe, it doesn't have illustrations of the roses, just sort of watercolour 'decorations' throughout the book. Would be great to read on Kindle.

Seeing this topic is "Slightly Off Topic" I thought I would take it further for something to do this morning.

This is our little girl we found a few years ago, She was eyedropper fed, then baby bottle, she makes a good scarf in Winter as you can see in the second photo, In the third she told us that "She, Tabatha" wants the fire lit as it is getting cold for her. Enjoy my "off topic" morning everyone.

Very cute! We had a kitten years ago that we had raised on a doll's bottle. He grew into an enormous cat, but he always loved that doll's bottle and would lie on his back holding it in his paws and sucking hopefully at it.

Re: Slightly OT.....
Well, my Tea rose book arrived today! It's fabulous! Everyone must purchase one. I'm going to bed to read it now.
And the postie also brought my 7 little fruit trees today. Four English heritage apples, a French quince, and two old fig varieties. I will plant them over the weekend. I'm pretty over the moon

Re: Slightly OT.....
Is that "the" tea rose book? The one hat made me drool over giant Tea Rose bushes I couldn't ever fit into my backyard?
I would love to grow apples as well! Be prepared to have to net/protect them if you have lorikeets in your area. There's an old apple tree where I work, and once a year, its totally covered in sqawking, quarrelling lorikeets for an hour or so, until they have stripped it bare.

We have a flock of about 60 lorrikeets that frequent our garden. Although they eat some of the fruit on our trees they don't touch our roses.

Re: Slightly OT.....
Yep, that's the book Curdle! It's brilliant.
We have a lot of birds here, a couple of lorikeets, some rosellas and king parrots, and sulfur-crested cockies. And magpies, miners, and little finch things. And ringtail and brushtail possums. I know they'll eat some of the fruit, but hopefully there will be enough to go round... But when I plant the cherries next year, I know I'll have to net those!
