Autumn Garden in Queensland

Goodness! Is your Mrs B R Cant a climber, Balinbear? I have 2 Mrs B R's and they are large shrubs but had not heard of her as a climber? She is very beautiful, whatever form she takes ...

We are not sure whether they are a climbers but they do a bloody good imitation if they are not. I spoke to Billy West (one of the tea ladies) about it and she believes that teas will naturally climb if they are put on something to climb upon. I tend to think our BR Cants are like this. They are generally a big shrub so given the opportunity I think they just leek going. We have them on arches, pergola and on the shelter. We planted one recently on a pillar and we have a couple we are trying to keep as shrubs.

All of ours came from a cutting we got from somewhere that neither of us can remember. We propagated on and we have quite a few around the place. For some reason we are now having troubles growing more from cuttings (actually we are having trouble getting any to take) but we intend to keeping on trying.

Gary, are you using wood from the original BR Cant or from others that you have propagated ?

Thanks, Balinbear. I had another look at my BR's and can see how they could be encouraged to climb. Another of my teas, Mrs Reynolds Hole, is definitely a candidate for a climber - long tentacles everywhere!
And I'd also like to know if you've used wood from the mother plant for all your cuttings (thanks Roseman).

The "mother plant" gave us 4 plants. Subsequent to that we have grown probably 20 from the cutting grown plants so I don't think this is an issue.

Our success rate for cuttings (apart from Borderer) has be pretty abysmal of late. Even Comm de Labarthe which we could strike by cutting a bit off and sticking it into the ground .has struggled.The weather was pretty hot over summer so that may have had a lot to do with it.

Thanks for warming me up Balinbear. I need it, it's damn cold here. That M. Tillier is such a beauty, it's a rose that has that special something. Also love that little bird house. Do any birds nest there? I like a touch of whimsy in the garden.
I just met my new neighbour across the road, gardening in the pitch dark, with her husband holding a torch for her. Guess what she was planting? Yep, got it in one. I hope her roses appreciate her efforts.

No nests in the birdhouses. The birds around our place don't appreciate the things I do for them.

And I won't tell you what time I came up from the dark tonight.

What can I say? You are more dedicated than me, that's for sure. It's too cold and wet for me.
