Oh Maree, that is just way too hot...I hope you find a cool spot...i remember in Adelaide when this happened, the house would heat up and you couldn't sleep.. how do you get your roses through these days? how do you manage the watering?

Re: Wanting to start Grafting
One of the problems to grafting as I see it, is to get your hands on the appropriate rootstock. I have tried all the rose nurseries here in Perth and none are willing to sell even 1 fortuniana plant, so there you go.

Re: Wanting to start Grafting
I secured two plants of fortuniana from Mistydownes last year as they had it in their catalogue as a bare rooted plant.

Re: Wanting to start Grafting
Interesting point I found out recently, that is, the mam who is employed by Swiss Roses to do a lot of their grafting here in Perth, lives in Quinns Rock, the suburb next to me. Now he would be a good bloke to get hold of to glean some knowledge. Hopefully one day our paths will cross and he will be willing to give some advice.

Go and knock on his door Paul, he can help or just ve polite and say no. The old saying "nothing ventured, nothing gained" comes to mind.

In recent weeks the AQ has grafted 13 roses 12 have taken and 1 is struggling. The roses budded were Our Rosamond and Grace Warren.

Re: Wanting to start Grafting
In NSW the AQ runs budding classes for small groups and they are proving to be both popular and successful. For years in NSW budding demonstrations were held for large groups and apart from making those in attendance aware of the process it didn't teach them to bud. At the last class she budded straight onto a sticks of multiflora then placed them into pots of river sand to grow. This method was originally trialled in NSW by Max Ryan and although the strike rate is down on budding onto a stick that is already growing it does work. I am not sure this method would work using fortuniana as it doesn't strike as easily as multiflora.

Re: Wanting to start Grafting
Always wondered about something.
There are a couple of teas and other roses that strike quite easily up our way so could they be used for grafting. The advantage is if the bud fails to take you could let the rootstock grow and you still had a decent plant.

I would suggest you aquire a couple of sticks of multiflora put them in a pot of wet river sand and once they have taken root transplant them in an area where they have room to spread and you will have an abundant supply of budwood.

Re: Wanting to start Grafting
Where was this John, Looking at Roworths the have got numerous hedges of them, from memory I'd say about 6-7 feet high,
Re: Wanting to start Grafting
when we did the budding today, we only used the bottom eight inches of the plant, because after three weeks you cut just above the top graft and throw that bit away.. So if there is a way to utilize the top half of the fortuniana, I have no idea......maybe they regrow the branches for new stock......
