Wanting to start Grafting Empty Re: Wanting to start Grafting

Paul if you would like to attend the budding class there is an easy solution join the West Australian Rose Society. By joining the WARS you will have access to a great deal of information and courses this is not to mention the fellowship with a group of dedicated rosarians. I personally have attended two National Rose Society Conferences hosted by the WARS and enjoyed the hospitality and friendliness of the members. In 2012 I accompanied the AQ when she presented a two day seminar on Judging and Exhibiting for the members of WARS that was very professionally set up at the Swiss Nursery. This is when I first met John and Anna who were in the group attending the seminar. From my experiences of the WAR I would recommend joining to any one who lives on the sunny side and is interested in roses as your knowledge and expertise in this field will be enhanced. For that matter being part of any of the state rose societies is enjoyable and enlightening.

As a follow up to my previous post the cost to join to WARS Is $30 per year and for that you receive quarterly magazine and Australia Rose Annual. Also you are able to purchase Neutrog products at heavily discounted prices.

So after doing some research on grafting I've worked out the rootstock issue. I thought one would have to keep buying the rootstock every time you wanted to graft. Now as I see it, one just needs to buy, a plant (fortuniana or whatever) and you take cuttings from this plant and get them growing then graft onto that cutting, is this right? Wanting to start Grafting 2254931222

You are on the right track. I have a bush of multiflora that grows like a weed and I take cuttings from this and place them in a pot of coarse river sand where within a couple of months they are growing and ready to bud on. Last year I purchased two plants of fortuniana from Mistydownes and I am hoping to do the same thing with the fortuniana however I am led to believe it is more difficult to grow cuttings of fortuniana. I will be taking advice from Rudi Etter on growing fortuniana cuttings when my fortuniana  bushes have grown enough to take cuttings. I am sure when Rudi does his course on budding for members of the West Australian Rose Society he will be teaching those at the course how to grow their own rootstock.

If you are serious about budding I would reinterate what I suggested earlier join the WARS and attend the course being run by Rudi Etter at the Swiss Nursery and you will learn in short time how to budd roses successfully.

Doug, how old is the 'Fortuniana' you purchased ?, can you do me a small favour, let one branch set seed and collect it please.
When Paul has done his grafting class, he should be able to tell you the method Rudi uses to strike 'Fortuniana' stocks as well Doug, hopefully.

David I received the bushes as barefoot plants in June 2013. They are in pots and are about 50cm in height. So far they have produced any hips but when they do I'll sow some seed. Recently I planted some seeds of multiflora and they have germinated.

Wanting to start Grafting Empty Re: Wanting to start Grafting

Post by hariet~rose 11th January 2014, 09:18

Hi Rosebuds, a very timely thread. I have just started some grafting this morning and I am really clumsy with it. Mainly having difficulty with making the T cut on the stock plant. Are there any workshops in eastern Australia that anyone knows might be coming up? I'd be happy to join a society to participate,. I was reading a book by A.S Thomas the other night and he wrote that some budding experts can bud a 1000 a day. I did 4 this morning and it took my an hour!! I have another question but i will start a new thread..

Hariet there are budding demonstrations and workshops at the various Rose Society of NSW Regionals however these are centred on Hunter Valley, Sydney(Penrith,Camden & Carlingford), Goulburn and South Coast so you can see living at Armidale isolates you pretty much with respect to attending society budding demonstrations and workshops. I was speaking to Andrew Ross of Ross Roses on Thursday and he buds about 1,100 roses a day and by the time the budding period is over he would have budded 40,000 roses. All the expert budders tell me its practice and lots of it that improves your budding skill.I like you am a novice budder and since I stepped down as RS of NSW Secretary I have some free time and I have been practicing. I will assume you have a bush of rootstock growing so what you do is take a piece of rootstock about 35cm the take a bud from your rootstock then bud back into the rootstock and you can do this a number of times using the same piece of rootstock. When yo have filled your piece of rootstock cut another piece and start again.

Caroline, is the bark lifting on the understock/rootstock, that is where most people have trouble ?
"Google" is one of the best places to find video's/youtube things about budding. Some of the bigger overseas breeders have them in their catalogues. I will try to find some for you later today.

I find the bark (cambium) too brittle to flex out of the way, it just splinters.. i did watch how to do it via an on-?line thing. I also nicked an art scapel from the MOTH (shsss don't tell) and it helps with the procedure, but the problem is with the integrity of the T flap .. any thoughts (might be a Dr Huey peculiarity)

My instant thought is lack of sap movement in behind the cambium/bark layer. I would suggest that it might not just be the Doctor, possible fix would be a good drink of water to aid in the sap flow in behind the cambium/bark layer.
The T cut is made from the ground upwards then a cut horizontal at the point of the crossing the bark 'should' fold open with just a push with the knife downwards and slightly to the side. The Doctor will need a bit more sap flow from memory for this to work.

yes, it does present as a lack of sap flow.. but the plant lives in a pot in my greenhouse and gets twice daily watering... however, if it makes a difference, maybe the mistake i have been making is to start my T slice from the top down, then across..and not from the bottom up.. will give that a try on some practice shoots.. thanks!
