Best Blooms in winter.

Now is the best time for rose blooms, there are less bugs chewing on them and colour is wonderful.

I have highlighted the best blooms seen over the past three weeks.

These were 1st week of July, 'Jean Ducher'

Second week " " 'Titian'

Third week " " Now 'Souvenir de Wootton' Climbing.

These must be pretty good when you consider I have 250 varieties totalling 600 roses.

Sorry John, I still do not have a camera. Did borrow my son's camera to take pix for rose registration and have found a fault with it. All the pix looked poorly focused and colours were not true. Shame really but have a look on Help me find Roses.com at Souvenir de Wootton Clg. My blooms look as good as or better than that.

For us BR Cant and Bon Selene have been stand outs. G.Nabonand (Jean Ducher) and Squatters Dream have also been good.

Mons Tillier and Marie Van Houtte are about to burst into flower and Comtesse de Labarthe just keeps pumping out the flowers. Marquis de Vivens put on a great show (for plant less then 12 months old) a few weeks back and most of the found Teas from SA have flowered as well.

Mrs Graham Hart has sent out new growth in all directions and has put out some nice flowers.

Most of the roses are spot flowering so there is lots of colour throughout the garden.

The Tea blooms are great here also. What wonderful roses the Teas are being evergreen and super low maintenance because they don't need winter and mid summer pruning.
Dead heading can be a chore because they can have hundreds of blooms on a very large mature bush.

Gary, your garden is famous with the Heritage Rose people
who mention how well your Tea roses grow in the Qld climate.

The rose 'Souvenir de Wooton' Clg I mentioned above is very old and is a Tea crossed with a Hybrid Perpetual.
Hence it is a HT but a real collectors rose. It doesn't strike well from cuttings so it is pretty rare. I think Rustons, Deb Kelly and I are the only people with this one. It's a much better rose than so many of the modern PBR HT's being flogged around the nurseries.

Yes in general (esp when compared to the modern roses) Teas are extremely low maintenance. The fact that they have been found on deserted properties etc still flowering without any care whatsoever is a testament to their character.

Gary, I was thinking the same as you, might be a good rose for you. It is best mid winter until November.
Actually Deb suggested I propagate it, she got one and the others have fallen on hard times as they just haven't been sellers. Pat Toolan admired the rose at Ruston's and tried to propagate one. Definitely a rose for the collector.

I'll look around for a smaller one tomorrow and get back to you.

Thanks Bruce. Could you see if you have any Marie Nabonand as well. Deb gave me one but it got very wet when it was still quite small and did not survive.

Gary, there's a pink and a red but nothing available in pot's.
There used to be about 15 after I grafted them for Deb from Ruston's buds. But they didn't turn out a seller for me possibly due to not being promoted. Unfortunately they were neglected and most lost.

Must tell you the story re the buds from Ruston's. The first lot all turned out pink which is not red as shown on HMF.
I did get the reds the next grafting season and am of the opinion the pinks are bush roses and the reds are climbers.

I will propagate these again this season and your name will be on a pink and red. I'll be very interested in your comments.

That is interesting that there wold be that much difference between the two. I was not aware that there was a shrub as such more that it is not a huge climber and can be kept down as a shrub.

Gary, I have kept them in pots since I budded them 5 years or so back. Have a look on HMF and you will see quite a difference. Ruston's may have sent the wrong buds initially but the growth and blooms are very similar.
Being a sport from the bush it would appear the colour and growth has changed. I have noticed differences in bush and Climbers in the past.
