Re: More Blooms in Brisbane
That's a beautiful rose Jackie. What is it? I love the changing of the colours from outer to inner petals.
I was very surprised to see what my Dioressence has come up with. It is still sticks (pruned July) with 2 leaves just unfurling and there between them is a flower bud! Very strange.

Re: More Blooms in Brisbane
Silkyfizz, that’s Gertrude Jekyll. Thanks for the compliment and letting me know I forgot her name.
Sorry to hear about you Dioressence; I looked her up on HMF, sounds to be wonderful with that strong interesting fragrance. Is this the first time she’s been acting strangely?
maree, yes, it’s a DA, cheers
Jordan 71, I’ve got a Heritage, but she’s still sitting on her bud
I didn’t fiddle with the colour in post, and that’s what she really looks like, actually nothing like in the catalogue, where there are no lighter outer petals shown; but that’s what she looks like here from start to end at all hours of the day. She’s super vigorous and full of blooms at all stages today, but that photo was taken some days ago.
Bravo, David for getting it right.

Re: More Blooms in Brisbane
Maree, you’ll have all the blooms when mine run out. Our weather is fine, and we have some intermitted T-shirt days. We’ve had good rainfall here around planting time; it was perfect; I didn’t have to water them in. I’m kicking myself though for planting some of them a bit too deep, because after mulching some of the lower leaves are touching the mulch (danger zone!). Some people suggest taking these leaves off, but I can’t get myself to do that. Now I have to do some pretty advanced yoga poses to water around them.

Re: More Blooms in Brisbane
Lol, , Jac2 i know exactly what you mean , the planting of roses is so damnn tricky , too high , too low , get the stick out and measure it , stand back have a look , lol , it goes on . I did read somewhere they are better too low than too high , don't know if thats true or not ... and i just love pink roses ....

Re: More Blooms in Brisbane
John I agree, IMO raised beds all round are the way to go if it is at all possible. What I have at the moment is a newish bed with some roses in it , they are planted to the bud union at soil level or below and the surrounding area can be raised as I find/get the material.

Re: More Blooms in Brisbane
What happened to the photos? Are they taken down periodically or did rosemeadow take them both?
(If ever in doubt about any of my comments, I’m always kidding).
GJ grows vigorously here and wider than tall: the second photo showed only the centre of the bush: there were two very long canes, one on either side that didn’t fit into the photo and didn’t have any blooms yet. The flowers start to look a bit dehydrated and scatter quite a bit faster than Tamora’s, but the blooms come in faster successions. The lighter outer petal effect vanishes with extra warmth/sunlight, but the blooms still look very pretty just in pink.
Silkyfizz, I’m not exclusively into pink and really adore yellow and white (hence my fascination with Charlotte), but with the German word for pink actually being rosa, I think most people who grow a large number of roses are probably likely to have a fair amount of pink in their gardens. When you say ‘converting’, what colours predominate in you garden at the moment?
Maree, I think if you plant too high, you’re more likely to get suckers (stimulated by light); and roses may be planted actually below the graft for extra protection in areas where the ground freezes over. But I can really see how planting too low is problematic, because no matter what I do, the lover leaves always get splashed. I have noticed thought that where I planted Alyssum in the pots it really does a great job as splash buffer, if I only aim into it (on the shower setting).
All my rose beds are raised for better drainage. I take it that you don’t really fuss over wet leaves, with your roses planted to the bud union at soil level or below, David. Did you do that for a purpose?
