Dan is your "The Endeavour" in shade or semi shade, I love the colour.
"Blackberry Nip" is not a favourite rose or was not, but after that shot I am being seduced by the photo you presented.

That endeavour, what a brilliant colour. Photos I've seen show more pink I think so obviously growing in semishade works. How much sun does it actually get Jordan or is it dappled shade throughout? Does this make the growth leggy?
Your BN reminds me of a camellia in the petal arrangement. Lovely.
How are you managing with all your pots in this heat Jordan? Must be quite a job?

hi silky,

the endeavour gets about 4 hours of sun, it loves the shade for the rest of the day , and the growth is not leggy at all .
silky the weather we having is insane .. i have been watering everyday sometimes spot watering for the second time per day .. 300+ pots is a hard job lol.. i will be glad when the weather change

After 8 months I'm disappointed too with Blackberry Nip. It's not that different in colour than other roses I have or have had and the scent is nothing remarkable at this stage, It's going to be a birhday present for a Libra I know. Unimpressed.

I'm with you on this one Betsy.....I had one of the first BN in the state and waited awhile to get it........it even had its own parcel of land that was put together in the best way possible while waiting for the baby to arrive.

I found it to be a slow grower .........prone to BS..........not a good bloomer or repeat bloomer.........blooms are small........and not as fragrant as was made out to be....just did not live up to the hype that was put out by the sellers......definitely not happy about this one

Jordan, sorry, but the numbers are against you here. Maree is in Melbourne, Neptune's in WA, and I'm in the Lower Hunter, NSW. Not climate. I think that BN is just not that good a variety OR all there of us have just gotten bottom-of-the-barrel mediocre plants (nah, the odds are too long on that, esp with Nepotune's special order).

You seem to have and love every rose ever grown, so perhaps among 300 plants BN doesn't stand out as a loser.

Among my 20-ish, BN stands out plenty, like Sweet Intoxication. Overhyped and really unremarkable.(The second SI actually was reduced to bs-ridden, leafless twigs. I hadn't seen that since 1998. Last night it went into the trash. )

Another one that I agree with you...... a lot of hype amongst people and I bought a potted one that was two years old and one that someone was getting rid out of their garden which was slightly older than the potted one.
With the one from the garden, we dug it up(and there was four of us) to get a canvas underneath and take all roots and soil without disturbing it.
Apart from not being a good bloomer or shape of rose, I could probably give you the name of quiet of few other roses that smell better than a SI. This is not only my thoughts, but other members of the Society. I bought SI to put on the bench for its smell, but it just doesn't hold its ground against other roses....

I do like the colour of BN , but , but if it doesn't have a perfume then it has no place in my garden , the only rose i will forgive for not being overly perfumed is Henri Matisse , it is a healthy , free flowering floribunda , but then again , it was touted as very fragrant . Damn rose descriptions and companies ,that don't live up to what they say , off with their heads i say!!!

Scent perception is so person-individual I always take claims of scent with "a grain of salt".
I've got roses in my garden that I'll sniff and think it's a 4 out of 10 for strength and then one of my olfactory-challenged relatives will come along and rate the same bloom an 8 out of 10... Shocked
That's usually when I go and check Papa Meilland or Oklahoma to make sure my nose is working!!! (And it gets worse - sometimes they will sniff my Damasks and go "meh"... and *I* think it's a 8/10 !!)

Perception is a good word Wendy. What do they say "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" so this can be translated to the "pong" of roses to each of us.

You are absolutely right , Wendy.

Perception also extends to the quality and type of scent. For example, I know people who loathe the smell of murraya; me, I find it transporting. Some swear by night-scented jasmine; to me, it smells like a sinister take on bubblegum.

In Rose Land, I can't for the life of me thrill to the perfume of Mr Lincoln, yet it is the benchmark of great rose fragrance. For sheer intensity, I find that Firefighter trumps Papa Meilland. For quality, nothing does it for me like Fragrant Cloud and Valencia and the soft sweet Jardins de Bagatelle. I personally don't like the sharp citrus scents, either, but I can't argue their formidable presence in roses such as Charles de Gaulel, PJPII and Perfume Passion.

On the whole, though, when selecting roses for the first time, I'll go with consensus. If I read a lot of comments about the power of the perfume of Rose X, I'll try it (all other things such as colour, disease resistence, rebloom being equal).

Sometimes i think something must be wrong with my sniffer , because someone will say isn't that a lovely perfume that rose has , but i just don't get it and then i also go over to a Aoteroa or Violina and yes i can smell them , strange very strange this perfume thing .......
