I move them into a bit of shade so their roots don't cook in the hot afternoon sun. They're still in smallish black pots and you can see they need it. They'll be going in the ground soon (been saying that for weeks!)

Yes it's hard to decide. Deane Ross does look spectacular in the pics. I want to visit Magic Gardens in February to check out their stock and see some of these roses that I lust for. More adjusting of the list, which is already far too long. Hope their cafe has good coffee.

silkyfizz wrote:Same here Maree. Too many wishlist roses to fit into available spaces. I can't see myself having many in pots. I've only got a few awaiting going into the ground and already I'm sick of moving them into the shade on really hot days. I couldn't do it if they were in really large pots.
I want to get Queen Adelaide, Firefighter, Oklahoma, Parole, Olde Fragrance, Pricess Alexandra of Kent, Abraham Darby, Young Lycidas,
and several more Munstead Wood (love it)
Maybe: Francis Dubrueil, Gemini, LD Braithwaite, Prospero, Camp David, Silver Jubilee, Monsieur Tillier, Daybreaker, Children's Rose, Ambridge Rose, Scentimental, Compte de chambourd, Eyes for You.

Wish my back could hold out for some serious digging or I could afford a "garden man". Trouble is I'm fussy so it would be a waste. Sort of like cleaning the house before the cleaning lady comes so she doesn't think you're a slob.

Great list there Silkyfizz.Dont discount Childrens rose lovely flower pink and petal count and perfume that has to be smelled to believed it's so strong..Easy can compare to the most perfume roses.Parole is another with a large flower and perfume also very strong. Both these roses are very healthy to.

I just happened to be in the B-store the other day and saw a pot of Eyes For You at $15.
I AM SO WEAK.

(and poorer)

The blooms blow really fast in hot weather. Warren will have to be quick with his pollinating...

Post by betsyw 25th January 2013, 14:01

Querida! as Gomez would say. And you should too, maree, when you hear the compulsive humming ;-) Silky will instantly recognise you.

Look, I have that awful feeling that Charles de Gaulle is a fine rose that I have dun wrong. Neat, sweet, and sorta petite - he's all that. His bloom power and his scent couldn't be faulted in my garden. Maybe he just needed a more ethereal, Zen background to look good in a vase.

To other matters: Now Silky, you are giving your seal of approval to Munstead Wood? I am encouraged to try, in that case. In DA Land, I also like the sound of PAoK. Must investigate that one further.

I don't want any more citrus-y roses than I can help at this stage, BUT all the tough new roses that are winners for me this year have that citrus tang, either pronounced or detectable as the flower develops.

Soo... I'm wondering: Is the citrus scent is somehow linked to the new health+perfume combo that the breeders like Kordes are working on?. Opinions from the hybridisers on this board would be interesting.

My list so far, FWIW:
Encores:
Another Firefighter to bring their number up to three
Another Baronne Edmond de Rothschild, ditto above
Another two Big Purples to bring their number up to four (They are not solid repeaters, so I want some extra bloom machines)

Debuts: - an evolving list subject to change without notice
Munstead Wood or PAoK (or can I expect more citrus flavours here?)
Black Caviar -definitely. Could be a dud, but gotta try
Olde Fragrance (dithering here, too big really)

Edit: Seems like a short list of newcomers, doesn't it? The 2013 catalogues might have some more riches to mine. Must comb through the posts here to see what gets the nod time and time again from you Morticias and Gomezes.

Betsy, how tall are your Baronnes de Rothschild's? I've got a note it's tall, so not sure if it will suit the spot I have in mind. Olde Fragrance - same problem.
Also I remember you and others here got Blackberry Nip few months ago, now I'm thinking that might be a better choice. How is that going? Recommended?
Munstead, it's a healthy little bloom machine. Flowers very beautiful, neat growth habit. I want several to line the drive out front.

Roseman, had a look, very interesting stuff.

LOL AutumnDamask. Avoidance and denial are so greatly underrated, don't you think? When it suits me, I also find that $15 looks very like $5.
$18 not a bad price at all, in any case. Congrats on your E4U!

Silky, I think Ozeboy or Neptune or Balinbear has had more experience over the years as opposed to months with B EdR, but my limited acquaintance with the good Baronness suggests that she can be kept happily if arbitrarily at 4.5ft. One of mine is showing signs of reaching further, but the other is a fat and happy shorty, and very good producer at a mere 2.5ft . Olde Fragrance scares me, from what I've heard here ;0(

Blackberry Nip is what I would call "latent" right now, gorgeous and fragrant when it blooms. This first year, It's pre-teen shy and awkward, and I haven't seen much. I hope it gains more maturity next season. Worth a reasonable wait, this one.,

Post by betsyw 25th January 2013, 21:54

maree, have you cut a few blooms for indoors? My BN tends to release scent in intermittent pulses (like Big Purple, actually), and not as a steady even perfume like, say Firefighter or Cloud or Love Potion.BP's perfume is best captured inside. For now, at least.

Then again, who knows what roses are up to in their tiny brains? Parole, the reliable perfume power pack, has just shut down its scent factory. Last few blooms had zero scent - now THAT;'S really unnatural@

:snarf: Yeah, over time my lists begin to look like deranged ransom notes, with gap-osis where something was deleted, totally differenmt tyepfaces for new entries, and upper/lc "codes" whose meaning I forget when it's actually time to order.

About BEdR: The Baronne looks like the least interesting rose in teh Treloars catalogue. Not nearly enough porn for her. Give her a first flush to get going, and then I think you'll find this one reels in the visitors. Colour is like a muted dusty cerise Dior lipstick, elegant and accommodating.

Of course, now you'll probably hate it, and wish you had Charlie de G ;-) Neat Sweet Petite.
