Re: Aoteroa rose
Jac , like your thoughts about the birdbath , Aoteroa is one rose i won't be pulling out , unless something happens to it . Like you i am constantly wanting to add and change the garden around and ideas are always floating around my head , much to husbands dismay , just need the time and money of course . I'm afraid i'm really not that clever to be able to graft roses and they have long , long gone lol !! ,

Betsy , Amazing Grace does sound good doesn't it , but will it be another PJP11, hope not !!! Have you had any success at all this year with the new ones ? Ozeboy , thanks heaps , that answers a puzzle in my head , that wouldn't go away , and here i was thinking i was looking after it , but maybe last year i didn't water it enough during the summer , i still work four days a week , full days , so its easy to forget , mental note to myself , water Aoteroa .... Thanks .....

John, I will send you a brochure when I get clearence from the distributers.
They might like a trial on roses in WA.
Don't know their marketing strategy at present and wouldn't like to upset them.

Speaking of partners not approving of our creative instincts to furnish and constantly change the landscape, when I indicated a birdbath might be required, he pointed across the street and said:
“There’s a creek; they’ve got wings”

Re: Aoteroa rose
John, I haven't seen the site as the company found me. What is on their site is same as the brochure. You will probably see some references to the tests I have spoken about mainly dealing with Hydroponic Lettuce and other vegetables. The growth and plant well being reported to me was astounding. Lettuce matured a lot earlier than untreated ones but the cost of production can offset the bottom line with the faster growth.
I haven't been able to catch the Hydroponic guy up the street so might have to interupt him on the property.
Have you fenced off the cow paddock yet, great fertiliser.

Re: Aoteroa rose
Now THAT'S hilarious . Engrave it in gold on your birdbath.
Edit: Er, the hilarity refers to Jac's husband's droll remark. Pardon me for saying so as a new arrival, but isn't the Dutch Bio-Power discussion a bit OT in an Aotearoa thread (albeit the trial is very interesting, and yes, we want to know more), and deserving of its own thread?

I am the worst offender. I realise this. Give me a topic, and I veer off 180 degrees. And not into interesting uncharted waters either.

Re: Aoteroa rose
Haha that's funny Jaci, he sounds like a man with a dry sense of humour and no nonsense attitude. My husband rolls his eyes and shakes his head when he hears some of my ideas, which are constantly whizzing around in my head. With just a suburban block though, changes are a bit limited, so I have to think and choose carefully.
I have 3 large water bowls + large bucket for the dogs, which a huge variety of birds just love, constantly bathing. If the water is in the shade it makes a huge difference to bird visits and topping up frequency.
What roses/plants have you planned for your birdbath bed?

Re: Aoteroa rose
Thanks for asking, Silky, this is my birdbath, which is set atop the trunk of a large Mock Orange I recently removed.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
The bath came with a pedestal, which I intend to use as the base for another pot. In the meantime I under-planted the back with Dietes grandiflora, a perennial with erect, narrow sword shaped, green leaves and white butterfly flowers with light blue and yellow highlights, and created a circle of Petunia Cappuccino, which has the most interesting creamy chocolate colouring, i.e., creamy outer petals with a dark chocolate throat. I will post a photo of the finished set up soon. You can see the hole I dug for a rose that will complement these soft neutral colours, and why I would think Aoteroa would be perfect for the spot.
And thanks for pointing out the birdbath should be shaded. I’ve been waiting for the birds to drink from it, but never saw even one just sitting on it; and that must be the reason (or else they all fly to the creek). However, James assured me he saw a little bird drink from it the other day. In any case, I better make that Aoteroa a standard.

Re: Aoteroa rose
I like your neutral colour scheme Jaci, and yes Aoteroa will fit nicely there, especially as a standard. Dense planting will help give the birds a feeling of security so you might see more feathered visitors as time goes by. Looking forward to seeing how it develops.
