Seems to have the same stems as mine. Not as thick as the HT's. Is it supposed to be like this?

Rosy,
Falstaff grows sort of like Constance Spry. I call it a semi climber. I cant give you a pic of ours yet as our roses have only just got leaves, but after seeing your pic I went out to look at ours and with those thorns we have not got the same plant. Ours has no where near the amount of thorns that yours has. So one of us must a mislabled plant.
Jordan maybe be able to solve the problem by his thorns.

Hi Carole, if you're looking at the very front plant with the pink flowers that's a cactus. It's the plant just behind it. I can't see the thorns from this photo?

Post by AutumnDamask 28th September 2012, 08:07

First off - make sure it isn't the understock. Wink

I've had canes of several roses (HTs) that seem to go up and then they flop down and grow horizontal. It's like they went all weak near the base of the cane. Dunno Most were eventually pruned off because they were in the way.
Of course, Falstaff is supposed to be a semi-climber, as Carole pointed out, so flexible canes are most likely to be expected.

Thanks Autumn, that would make sense. It was one of my very first roses so I didn't research it as much as I would do now. It has room to spread out at the moment so I'll just let it haha

Rosy and Jordan could you please take some close ups of young leaves which are fully formed. Yours from the long running canes please Rosy. Check that these are not coming out below the graft to Rosy.
Rosy, go to the David Austin site and read up on his "Leander" group, it is what he has placed the taller/climbers in.
