Planting seeds

The hips are ripe everywhere...!
Quick question: best medium to plant the seeds in?

Seed-raising mix?

I have soil, manure, perlite, vermiculite, seed-raising mix, ordinary potting mix, sand.... LOL

AD you have to put the seeds which have been taken out of the hip, placed in a small container ( film containers are good) with cotton wool balls which have been moistened. They have to be in the fridge, (not the freezer)for minimum of 6 wks, then plant in seed raising mix. Make sure the seed mix does not dry out and keep in a cool area untill germination starts then move them into the full sun, do not let them dry out and you will never look back .

Ahhhh, okay. I thought this late in the season they would go into pots outside... but that leaves too much to chance?

Any treatment of the seeds/cotton wool before going in the fridge? (fungicide... don't know if I have anything other than kind-of organic-y stuff)
I have quite a few clear plastic mini containers. Or is dark better? Hmmm Not sure if I have many film canisters left. Altho I do have a couple.

Its not to late I still a few to harvest yet. Some people put fungicide, I don't , it does not matter if they are clear or dark, the clear ones have an advantage for one to peer and not to open.

Excellent! I'll harvest a bunch more hips then.

So far I have hips collected from Tess' (DA) and Mutablis. I think the ones are ready on Mme Gregoire too.
And I'm eyeing off the ones on 'Wedding Day' (I might get a monster... LOL)

I figure I'll just collect a bunch to play with. No doubt some roses will be more successful than others.

Wendy you Wedding day might have been fertilized by a minature and you might get a runt . I have an OP Mutabilis seedling , quite interesting, I think it was fertilized by Belle Story as it is the same pink combination,


A few years ago I crossed Mme Gregoire with Blue Moon and got this

Hehehe The mysteries that await ...! Only have 2 miniatures and I don't know if they were flowering at the same time as Wedding Day.

My Belle Story jsut suddenly upped and died this year. Don't know why. Flowering well during spring and then one branch after another went black.

So far the collection contains: Constance Spry, Sparrieshoop, Mutablis, Hebe's Lip, Mme Gregoire (only 1 hip left! ), Tess, Wedding Day and Gremlin.
The R.moschata autumnalis ( I think) has hips on it but not sure if it is worth taking hips from.

Wendy, how are the seed/seedlings going. By my reckoning they should be in seed trays roughly by now.
I do know not many on this forum raise there own seed roses, but I will place below my first success, had some failures so far, but what the heck.

Yeah... I kinda didn't get that project finished... I collected a whole heap of hips and then got busy with other things.

The bower birds have been snacking happily on the hips of 'Wedding Day'.

As Thomas Edison said "genius is 1% insperation 99% persperation" (or something like that) and I guessing growing from seeds follows along at the same success rate.

I could agree with you Gary, but, with a big BUT, I reckon it is mostly insperation and the challenge of it. The success part is to come I hope. What do they say " the proof will be in the pudden/eating".
